SEC Country question regarding high school football

For as long as I can remember the AHSAA (Alabama High School Atletic Association) has been class 1A-6A. A unanimous vote has shaken things up a bit and starting fall 2014 there will now be 1A-7A so they have voted to add a new class.
My question is this, within all the SEC states, what classifications are giving to High School teams and how many do you have?
I think that this is an interesting move by the state of Alabama and I think it will be beneficial in that it will be easier to pair teams instead not having enough good teams in a class.
Some may think this is a bad idea, but we'll see how it plays out.
Link to the article in the T-News regarding how it affects TCHS (Tuscaloosa County High School) and what the other area school will be ranked in.

not from SEC country, originally, but we had divisions 1-6, separated into regions during regular seasonal play. Division 1 being the largest

That's the way Alabama is except 6 has always been the largest but now 7 is. Thanks for answering.

There are 8 classifications in Florida, not counting private schools.

Ga has A, AA, AAA, AAAA, AAAAA, and AAAAAA.

GA did go up to 5 just a few years ago where they expanded to 6.

Texas = 1A-5A
In addition, for football participation, a school whose enrollment is at or below 99.5 students may choose to play either six-man football or 11-man Class A football. The school is included in a Class A district for all other events.

Louisiana formerly had 1A-5A, with public and private schools in open competition against one another.
For the regular season, not much has changed. But recent playoff regs have split the state brackets up into "select" (private) and "non-select" (public) schools.
So, now there is the normal 1A-5A for public schools, with Division 1-4 for private schools.
We also have class B and C schools (non-football).

Another interesting thing about Texas, at least in 5A, they have 2 state champions. 4 teams from each district make the play-offs. The 2 schools with the largest enrollment play for one title and the 2 other schools play for another. It's conceivable for 2 teams from 1 district to both be state champions.

And GA added a private school division to its single A

6man becomes 1A and basically everyone just moves up 1, unless your size changed.
The other big changes is that 3A districts will be split based on enrollment before the season, just like the 2A and A already are. And 3A and 2A will add a fourth playoff team from each district in the big sports.
And FWIW, I am on the fence about 4 teams from each district making playoffs. In ours, we had a team with just 3 wins make the playoffs in football. That's really, really sad. It gives the kids an extra game... to get their arse beat.

Poor Evangel and John Curtis.

Mississippi just recently went 1A-6A (Previously just went to 5A).
Mississippi still has a separate private school association that goes 1A-3A, and 3A is divided to Division I and Division II in football and basketball. Interestingly, teams from Louisiana and Arkansas compete in this association as well.
I could go into some more details on why this is (cough: segregation academies, can't hack it in public school football), but some North Delta Academy grad will come on and tell me why going to a non-accredited private school with trailer classrooms is better than going to one of the Level 5 schools with some of the best facilities in the state across town).

I disagree. I'm tired of this everyone-deserves-a-trophy attitude that is forming in this country. Kids today are in for a harsh reality when they find out that it isn't really like this in the real world.

Arkansas is 2A-7A.
We have way too many classifications so some schools have to drive all over the state to play conference games. My old school just got reclassified up and, despite being only 5 minutes from Fayetteville, we will be playing in a conference with teams from the Little Rock area. It makes no sense but it allows more teams to make the playoffs. Yay!!
It's beyond dumb and needs to be scaled back.

I'm happy about 7A. Being in a region with Hoover is guaranteed fail.

quote:I understand and don't necessarily disagree. It is certainly more beneficial to the power conferences. But it also gives schools that are not traditional powers a better chance of making the play-offs. My son's team got the opportunity to make the play-offs this year, lost to A&M Consolidated in the first round, but those kids(seniors) will never forget the experience.

I agree, but the trend is only getting worse.
