Big Ten and SEC athletic directors will discuss a possible partnership in football scheduling, along with their preferences for automatic bids, in the next iteration of the College Football Playoff.

The discussion is to take place at an in-person meeting in Nashville, Tennessee, next week, multiple sources from both conferences told ESPN on Monday.

The meeting is a continuation of the Big Ten-SEC joint advisory group, which was formed in February and includes the leagues' university presidents, chancellors and athletic directors. SEC commissioner Greg Sankey and Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti are scheduled to meet with the athletic directors for one day.

Sooner or later every P5 conference is going to merge with these two to create a super league that is independent from the NCAA. It's a matter of when, not if.

This is a good way to get respectable OOC games, and still get the easy win.

No, they're not. The SEC and the B1G, have absolutely zero incentive to "merge" with anyone else. There is not some puppet master pulling their strings and compelling them to create a logical and inclusive college sports league. The SEC and the B1G have won the game. They are the leagues. They control their own destinies, and it is in their best interest to maintain their composition as it presently lies. There may be a few more seats at the table (looking at you, Notre Dame and the top bit of the ACC), but this is pretty much the direction things will continue to trend. There won't be a sudden, seismic shift where the SEC and B1G decide to create some Super League. Why would they do that? Instead, they will continue to consolidate power with moves like this (scheduling agreements with each other, additional playoff auto-bids, and probably adding a few more schools each to round out their leagues at 20ish schools). These two conferences will continue to slowly squeeze out the rest of the college football landscape, eventually making most other conferences less able to meaningfully compete with them (think the present G5 vs. P5, but instead it will be everyone else vs. P2).

no becuaase there is no reason to add the dead wieght of teams from the smaller conferences

Maybe a few ACC and Big12 teams still add value, but thats it

Depends on the team. Oregon, USC, Nebraska all have dynamic offenses.

I actually like power football though and do not mind watching teams like Illinois with Bret Bilema or Rutgers with Greg Schiano. It can be fun watching them pound the occasional Air Raid team for a contrast in styles or vice versa.

Big 10 shouldn’t get four automatic bids. Two at best. If they want four, then the SEC should get six.

In reality there should be no auto bids. Top 12 teams every year.

frick this shite. I do not want to have to be forced to watch a bunch of boring Big 10 OOC games, near guaranteed matchups vs Big 10 in the playoff, and even more Big 10 games in the bowls for everyone else.

I’m sure fools here will be all “ohh I’d love to play Michigan or Ohio State so kewl!!!” when in reality you’re going to be more likely to play schools like Purdue, Indiana, Maryland, and Rutgers.

The same way they've been determining the Top Four for the last decade.

Watch out for incoming lawsuits if this was to happen. It's collusion and possibly anti-trust implications. The other conferences will almost certainly try to block this from happening.

The article stated that the B1G wants the SEC to move to nine conference games before they would agree to this, so the conferences are on "even" footing from that standpoint. So that's a win, an extra SEC game.

And if you are like Mizzou and schedule four dogshit non-conference games (Murray State, Buffalo, Boston College, and UMass), then even a bottom-feeder B1G game is a tremendous upgrade.

I would love to watch the remnants of the Pac or ACC attempt that argument after they tried to box-in the SEC just one year ago with their ACC-B1G-Pac alliance. Then, ya know, the B1G cannibalized them and there were no lawsuits.

It’s not an upgrade. I don’t want to watch the same 16 teams in perpetuity. I don’t want to see more of the same SEC teams we already play all the time.

The entire reason CFB is so great is how many schools there are and all the different traditions you get to see.

Adding a game against a Kentucky or South Carolina that we’ve already seen multiple times and then having Purdue dumped in your lap is not an improvement to a schedule no matter how much yall try to pretend it is.
