I'd be upset if I was a SC fan mostly due to his age. It seems unlikely he'll coach more than a few years.

Not even remotely the same except for they were both old white men that coached at LSU.

No East and West next year. With the addition of UT and OU it will be 2 permanent opponents (A&M and Miss State) and 8 rotating ones, no divisions.

Not exactly. South Carolina is a top 10 baseball program. Kansas is a bottom 10 football program. Plus Mainieri was a much better coach overall at LSU than Miles.

Good solid men(for the most part), understand how to build a great foundation for a program with quality success but really just past their prime as to what it takes to compete at the current level for a Championship. Maybe In wrong, but I bet I’m not.

I’d bet a lot of money that Paul will have more success.

What are we betting.

I would add Michael Jordan.

He'll be 70 in 3 years. I'd be willing to bet you he'll coach less than 4 years.

I like Paul, but it seems like an odd hire.

If Paul were still at lsu we still wouldn’t have had a title since 2009. He got lazy on the recruiting trail and became what Van Horn is at Arkansas. Sometimes it’s good for the position and the man to find new blood.

SCarolina Baseball has great facilities and a strong fanbase. Kansas Football had neither.

We'll see is CPM can navigate the Portal and NIL. That will determine his overall success, IMO.

I say Carolina can get 5 seasons out of Paul.

Paul should enjoy retirement. I don’t get His motivation to try to build a dominant program at USCe at his age. Unless he needs the money, it doesn’t make sense to me.

He is a fine man. If he has gas in the tank he can stabilize the program and win some games. Let’s all just be supportive and hope he does well ( but not too well if it involves us) and enjoy the return of Paul to Baton Rouge. I can’t bring myself to hate on Paul.

What's odd is their AD is a better coach than Mainieri but South Carolina seems more interested in paying him to be a mediocre AD than an elite baseball coach.

Did he continue to get paid the last few years after retired. And if it wasnt the s hool is that something a disability ins provider would have covered due to his health issues?

It was wrotten at the time of his retiring that "Mainieri is under contract through June 30, 2024, at approximately $1.1 million a year."

All in all they accomplished exactly the same at LSU.
Both won a Title and lost one and regressed significantly as the years went on to a point where the game had passed them by.

Whoever downvoted, I'd be interested to know why you think Mainieri is a better coach than Ray Tanner.

on the big spur message board they are completely stoked about it. Very few references to his age. They act like they just hired Nick Saban in his prime.

Two of those people don’t stand to gain anything by saying otherwise. And one of them has no reason to know otherwise.

The fourth may or may not know differently.

Correct. But the dude seemed burned out the last few years at LSU. Not sure another pressure cooker SEC job is what he needs.

Exactly. And the game has passed him by, not a bad thing. Saban has that self awareness but apparently PM does not. When you sit down and write the pros and cons to taking that next job versus retirement how does the latter not check more boxes??
