Well just math says he would have had 3 more opportunities in 05, 06, and 07 with rosters at the top of college football. Obviously the 07 team won it without him anyway.
Also no reason to think he couldn't have matched 08-23 at LSU instead of Alabama.
So conventional wisdom says 1 or 2 more just by staying in college football instead of spending time in the NFL.

I wonder if there's a world in which Schmidt goes JUCO but remains a commit and then isn't offered what he wants again next year and comes to LSU when he can actually get a rotation spot.

It's so funny. 2 years ago this time yall were all talking about how great Ashton Larson was going to be while I was saying he was just okay and Jake Brown was much better and yall were down voting me like usual. One of several takes yall aced like was ridiculous that came true over the years.

There's a reason Frey had a 1 mil number. He easily could have returned and had a season that netted that even at 75% of slot along with a massive NIL payment. I don't know Brown's number but I expect it was 1.5 mil. And for somebody like Milam, he's getting paid an NIL amount as much as he's losing in signing bonus. It doesn't always make sense for LSU to pay that-- especially for bullpen pitchers for instance who can get signing bonuses more than their value to LSU. I just keep seeing people act like players only return for their love for LSU and that is just wrong. There is a number where losing leverage makes more money. Milam hit that. Frey came down to the wire.

It's not apples to apples. If you go to the combine and submit a medical you're guaranteed 75% of the slot value whether you have leverage or not. The 40th pick had a 2.5 mil slot value. 75% of that is over 1.8 mil. Jake Brown, for example, could have returned and still easily got 1.5 mil or possibly even double that next season with no leverage. Yeah, for guys who aren't talented enough to be invited to the combine they lose all leverage and therefore all signing bonus money. It doesn't really apply to top end guys.
And even for the guys who aren't combine guys, if LSU wants them back they'll get what they lose in signing bonus in NIL.
The leverage thing just isn't as penalizing as it used to be with NIL and the 75% rule.

I'm really surprised by him saying 39 before the fall today, especially since he basically included Aase in the 39 saying 7 LHP. I would have guessed Aase and Yamin. But I think we would know if Yamin wasn't returning. I feel like it has to be 2 of the lower ranked freshmen.

Nah. It's basically just grandfathered in players that were submitted by their school at that time to eliminate them being cut to meet 34 man roster limits.

Well you're missing the newest transfer portal addition Kaden Smith so it's 41 but all the designated student athletes can stay on the roster without counting towards the 34 so it's likely we can carry all 41 of those.

Even if he's 50/50 ability between hitting and pitching, I see his playing time being at pitcher as a freshman. And then it's hard to reverse course after that, especially if he excels. The Brown and Guidry decisions were similar. Need for hitting and need for pitching, respectively. And they both performed well as freshmen.

Sheerin grew up with modest financial means so it's not likely he'll pass any money. NIL would probably have to match his offer dollar for dollar.
I think you're missing the point that the budget of pretty much every coach is very dependent on that coach. They aren't just "given" a budget. That's a huge part of the job. Football is probably the lone exception because it can't fail economically. Every other support has little economic impact and so it's up to the coach to raise funds.
Definitely should've said no if true. I'm not sure why you would enter the portal then immediately want to return with seemingly nothing transpiring during that time. Doesn't really make sense
