That isn't a quote from the FBI or the doj. Again, you are clueless. Read the indictment to understand before sharing opinions.

Person alleged he gave 18,500 of the 91000 he was paid to the moms of 2 players who were already on Auburn team. He didn't pay any recruits. The money came from the FBI through a money manager that the FBI busted for securities and wow fraud.

here is the real truth.......

quote:

In the first scheme, one complaint charged that Chuck Person, the associate head coach at Auburn, abused his coaching position to solicit and obtain bribes from a financial adviser and business manager for professional athletes. In return, he agreed to direct certain players from his program to the adviser when the players entered the N.B.A. Person accepted a total of $91,500 in the case, the complaint said, and is accused of passing on about $18,500 to the families of two athletes.

LINK

where does it say anything about him buying recruits?

He is an Auburn coach that personally gave 18,500 to players and their families

The word recruits doesn't change the issue

It changes it in a HUGE manner.

ETA "buying players" is a competitive advantage. What Person did is the exact opposite.

The word recruiting is the determining factor in whether or not Auburn benefits from this. It's pretty big issue.

Are you saying that the two players who took cash are not in danger of losing their eligibility?

No I'm saying it won't impact Auburn's issues associated with their compromised eligibility, but it likely will play into penalties and institutional violations

Auburn isn't an Adidas school.
Apparently, Nike had some documents subpoenaed as well, according to JOX.

I am wondering if this will eventually bleed over to football? I have no doubt this exact same thing is going on in that as well.

Football had a different play book than basketball when it came to paying players, but has been moving a toward the basketball model over the past decade with the summer camps and 7 on 7s sponsored by the apparel companies.

It's the "steering players to agents" is the concern in football. Just a few years ago agents were flying football players to Miami for parties. Are there football coaches doing the same thing for agents/money managers as basketball coaches are doing?

I mean, it could... The fact that the narrative now includes Nike suggests that the DoJ is focusing with a much wider lens than we thought and, as such, it could potentially include Under Armor and other apparel companies as well, and potentially spread to multiple sports... and multiple other schools.
