Wut? Dantonio, Fisher, Smart are very successful. Muschamp is decent. Jury is out on Jermy. Dooley was awful.

I disagree. Saban is good; he's just not great. Or he's great but not elite.

This is something you heard on a sports radio show and decided to repeat because you thought it made you sound smart by being contrarian. Its also wrong. Saban is both a good recruiter and good coach. You cant have Bama's success without both. Look at FSU right now. Years of top 10 classes and they are a dumpster fire. Saban is a good coach because he wins by adapting. He's won national titles with pocket QBs and mobile QBs. He won a national title with big gap stopper Dlinemen and agile linemen. He won national titles by playing ball control clock killing football and then adapted elements of HUNH. He switches players when something isnt working. He adapts to what is happening in college football and does it well and that makes him a great coach. So your hot take is both unoriginal and dumb.

Meh, depends on which X's and O's.

Saban's defensive schemes, especially coverages, are legendary

Saban would tell you he isnt the best Xs and Os coach. He is be best ever at development and running of a program from a day to day basis. Im convinced Bama would dominate running the Single Wing

We should have an Auburn is dirty or maybe a classic Tennessee offseason hype thread next!

Lot of truth to the original statement. Though I would say Saban is a decent Xs and Os coach, just nothing special. A bit above average.

Saban actually said this exact same thing to Mal Moore on the plane ride back from Miami to Tuscaloosa. Something along the lines of I dont think or know if you are getting a very good football coach, but you are getting the best recruiter there is.

Yep, Saban, like Bryant (who in the middle of his Alabama career changed his entire offensive philosophy from vertical passing to an option attack) has a huge strength in humility. Yes, humility. Saban freely admits he doesn't know it all, is not married to any particular system, and will gladly accept change or help any possible way he can get it

This whole thread sounds like 12 year olds playing Fortnite, screaming every time they get killed that the person must have been "cheating".

Agree. Saban knowing he is not great at Xs and Os and being willing to adapt and change is a very good quality he has. He is also spectacular at identifying talented coordinators.

It’s true but few will acknowledge it.

The other thing he is the best at is getting his team fired up to play. They come into every game ready to play for 4 quarters. They don’t stop. They don’t back down.

Bottom line, he wins. Regardless of how he does it, he does it. You can’t argue with results.

His "process" revolutionized CFB recruiting.Hiring multiple analyst and bringing a heavy emphasis to talent evaluation changed the game.

Curious about the "X's and O's" part of this equation.
Who exactly are the supposed X and O "wizards" out there? Especially on the defensive side.

In a world of analytics and quantifying everything, this is so often overlooked. The essence of coaching. Getting your guys to buy in and play hard. It's HUGE and somehow is often ignored these days

If the shoe fits. After all, he learned from the best during his DC days under Belichick. The only difference is that Saban is better at not getting caught.

Football is great because it is one sport where you CAN overcome a talent gap through technique, discipline, teamwork and toughness. I have seen it. When you have those advantages AND the big talent gap, well then you have the greatest dynasty ever

It's easy to recruit when you don't have a salary cap

The overwhelming majority of people on this board aren't qualified to know how good of an X's and O's coach he is b/c they don't know football intellectually on the level of a P5 HC. Most just watch the ball and know little about schemes, gameplans, execution of gameplan vs nonexecution of gameplan.

just the best recruiter of all time..........

this is a little easier to determine based on rankings of HS talent and the NFL draft, but doesn't take into account accuracy of rankings or development of talent once on campus (see Josh Jacobs, Quinnen Williams, etc)

His recruiting outside of Bama wasn't great. It wasn't til his players started getting cars and money that he got top classes. Handing a kid keys to a car and money doesn't require much recruiting.

Nick Saban told Mal Moore that you're getting a horse shite coach but a great recruiter. Was he making a joke or telling it like it is? His record speaks well no matter which box you checked.
