Why has Saban been more successful at Bama? Or why was he less successful at LSU? Is it the bama tradition? Was he not allowed to run the program at LSU the way he does at Bama?

I think it is a little of both.

What? Nothing about SEC being in Birmingham and Alabama getting easier schedules?

Threads like this are why the SEC Rant is a special place.

To the OP: Wouldn't seem more likely that Saban's success at Alabama is thanks in large part to the name he made for himself in Baton Rouge? When Saban got to Alabama, kids knew who he was and his track record. Easier to recruit from day one.

I know...crazy idea.

He's a better coach now. Pretty simple.

People can learn and get better.

He had a grand plan the whole time. He built LSU up, and he is using Alabama to destroy them. He's a sick man that will stop at nothing until LSU quits.

He himself admitted that he learned a lot about coaching / interacting with players at Miami. I think he matured and toned down post Miami. Players absolutely hated him while at LSU.

Some may perceive this as bait, but I think Saban has legitimately been more successful at Alabama.

My thoughts are that

A) I think the switch to the 3-4 had something to do with it. Saban was a changed coach when he got back from the NFL with a new philosophy. He started recruited different kinds of players.

B) The tradition and recruiting base of Alabama. Alabama is located in the heart of the South with access not only to Alabama but also Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee, Florida, etc. The drive isn't too far for parents, and Alabama has that winning image.

All of that said, bear in mind that Saban was obviously successful at LSU. He not only had to recruit well, but he also had to make LSU believe in itself. Alabama already believed, making it easier for the players to buy in.

Just some thoughts.

Nick Saban also left after the 04 season. If he would have stayed for several more years who is to say he couldn't have won more championships at LSU?
