It is a very sad day here in Tiger Nation.

This weekend will be very emotional not seeing Mike in his habitat and his many fans not taking pictures of the big guy.

RIP, but I'm not going to lie, the amount of attention is kind of weird. It's a mascot. Live, but still just a mascot.

He wasn't just a mascot. He was a beloved family pet...loved by a family of a million people or more. That someone can't understand the loss people feel is mind boggling.

A beautiful animal that brought joy to so many. Grace, power, and beauty personified. Rest easy, Mike.

I think what makes him different from other mascots (I mean... other than being a freaking tiger) is that he is kept on campus

students and the public can come around anytime and see LSU's real tiger mascot... really allows the LSU students and the fanbase build that relationship to the tiger

not ragging on Tennessee... it's just the circumstance I know immediately... but a UT frat goes to Smokey's owner's house, picks him up and basically is his caretaker from Friday night through the game to Sunday morning... then returns him back to his normal owner... it's just not the same

What gets to me the most is seeing the pics of those kids fighting cancer visiting him.

That's true for game days but Smokey makes many public appearances and is highly accessible. But let's not go down this route, this should be about Mike.

like I said... not trying to rag on Smokey (BTW I'd love to have a dog like that)... just what I knew from the behind the scenes story I saw on him and how he's handled

but I think the whole 24/7 aspect does play a bit of a role

I'm sure any fanbase that has a live mascot to gravitate to sees that particular animal as their personal pet... and part of their family
