I remember my 80 something grandfather....
Every time I went to see him in his small town he would tell us who had died.
A lot of times he would say "He was just a young guy... He was only 75"... which to a HS student like me... seemed strange.
Sadly, it doesn't seem so strange 50 years later.

Oh, my goodness! That's terrible. He lived fairly close to me and I remember joining him at Waffle House every now and then and talking basketball.

Met Joe Dean Jr at a sporting goods store he opened in a strip mall in Baton Rouge

Got to meet him a handful of times and he was always a genuinely nice person. I don't think I've ever heard a bad word about the man.

watched so many JP basketball games he was on the call for, especially during the midweek. Also ad at Birmingham Southern for a while.

This hits kinda hard. He was one of the main voices associated with the sports I grew up with. Him, Brando, Tom Hammond and Larry Conley, the immortal three Dave’s.
Now we’re stuck with Jimmy Dykes.

RIP General II Dixie was the greatest summer camp ever. A week straight of basketball and junk food. I still make my bed first thing in the morning because it was ingrained in my brain from having to do a few tours my first time at Dixie 
Also, I loved his story about the greatest defensive player who ever lived. He never scored a single point... but neither did his man!

I remember him being an assistant coach at UK and getting a ring. Joe Dean Sr was so proud of him.
Jr. took a lot of his dad’s colorful expressions to new levels. He was a joy to listen to on the JP games. He was SEC to the max.
Condolences to the family and to all of us that watched him. Very sad news but he is back with his dad listening to string music .

They didn't carry near the number of basketball games back when he played so I can't really say I remember him as a player but don't remember when I didn't know him or know of him as an announcer. Hate to hear of his passing. Kind of hits home (age wise). Has anyone said what his cause of death was?

I remember listening to his dad call SEC games on USA network on Tuesday nights during conference play back in the 80s.
