The vast majority of any school's fanbase is going to be in the their home state. There are 19.3 million people in Florida, 4.8 million in Alabama. If 100% of the people in Alabama cheered for the Crimson Tide, only 24% of Floridians would have to cheer for the Gators to match that number. Earlier someone said it was 65/35 Bama, which is about 14% of Florida, UF certainly has far more support then that in Florida. I don't think it is a huge stretch to say Florida has the largest fan base, just because of sheer numbers in alumni and the population of FL.
True, in fact I would probably go #1 UF and then UGA #2. I am not sure of how much weight A&M has in Texas, otherwise they may be #2.

Same can be said for Georgia/UGA.

Bama has sleeper cells all over the world. REC will call to activate if they get wind of this survey.

You are a huge bama homer that previously claimed you went to a private school outside of Alabama and now live in Dallas. So you either went to Vandy or you are a liar.
Eta: what sec school is in Dallas?

BBN travels like no other and they are pretty solid. What they lack in state population they make up in participation.

11 South Carolina must share the bowl with Clemson
Not sure if this has been discussed in the 8 pages so far but every time a "Most valuable athletic department" list comes out there is a reason SC comes in around #10 or so.
Do we share a state with Clemson? Sure. But SC dominates the entire state outside of the little corner in the NE. I can't tell you how many students from Winthrop, CoC, the Citadel, Wofford, etc. grew up as Carolina fans and remain so throughout their lives.
eta: We have a little more than 30,000 enrolled in Columbia, about 40,000 if you count the satellite campuses. Clemson only has about 18,000 on their 1 campus.

Auburn way too low
GA is shared by all sorts of schools, but I'd be willing to bet GT isn't 2nd or even 3rd in popularity. Probably more like:
1. UGA
2/3.Bama/Auburn
4.Florida
5. Tennessee/GT

This simply cannot be true.

Makes sense to me, I don't think anyone would actually wear purple and orange if a choice was given.

Well it is. People put too much weight in football. What because Clemson has a healthy lead over us in the football series they must have more fans?

Ask any SC native or any non-SC or Clemson fan that lives in this state. Columbia (obviously) and Charleston, and everywhere in between is far and away dominated by Gamecocks.
It's the state school, its the bigger school, its in the state capital (the largest city in the state), not tucked away deep into the northern corner of SC, its a school that is business / arts & science based rather than agriculture and engineering (appeals to a broader scope of students) etc. etc.

The data simply doesn't back up your assertion.
Thousands and thousands of fans buy Clemson tickets. Thousands and thousands buy Clemson gear. But to say that you dominate the entire state just doesn't hold water. You have about the same football ticket revenue. And you're separated by a mere 8 spots in the sales of licensed collegiate merchandise.
