This isn’t a coach coming from the Group of 5, this is a man who has coached in the SEC for 9 years Straws. He has given us plenty of evidence as to what he is. At this point it’s on him to prove he’s more than a good coach at a small program. Not the other way around, he doesn’t get the same pass a first year coach gets. He was paid 6 million dollars, patience left about 2 million dollars ago. When you ask that price you have to produce, it is what it is. Has he produced yet? I didn’t think so, he hasn’t even felt the heat yet, let him go 7-5 and see what happens.

I'll add let him go 7-5 and pull in a class 15-25 and see how well he likes it. He's getting paid top 10 $. We expect top 10 results.

Boom!! Exactly. All we heard from straws was that Mullen couldn't get talent because it was miss st and other teams took the top talent. Now that the top talent is staying home it's:

Om is on probation
Mullen built that for Moorhead
There's a ton of instate guys

Nothing's changed at Miss St except the HCs. That tells you all you need to know. Jim mcelwain for as bad as he was at recruiting never had a class behind damn duke.

They won't even admit that Mullen left them in a better place than when he was first hired.

I see you say this in every thread. And there's always who asks where the hell you've ever heard a State fan not admit that. You are making it up.

However, a wet sponge would have improved the situation Croom left us in.

MSU will almost certainly have a better record this year. That's not indicative of program quality, though--Mullen left MSU in good shape but took over a dumpster fire.

I'm happy to see that there are at least two sane MSU fans.

Most, however, think we are better this year, as do most preseason prognosticators.

Then most of you are in for a shock.

FYI... not every STATE fan was in love with Merlins. I personally couldn't stand the guy. I supported him because he was my coach... except when he lost to South Alabama. Wanted him gone after the 2016 season but nobody was calling.

I don't get the "lazy recruiting" MSU fans keep claiming. I don't follow recruiting at all, but Merlins did find a lot of overlooked talent that made to the NFL.

He has personality issues. For whatever reason, we had 7 D coordinator changes in 9 years, that says something.

The problem with Merlins is he couldn't win the big game. When the lights came on he froze. Saying that, his best coached game was a loss to Bama in 17' which ultimately got his resume back on Indeed.com.

To answer your question, State WILL beat FL this year in Starkville. State WILL have a better record than FL this year. It's yet to be seen what the 4-5 year situation will be for both programs... Moorhead could be the second coming of Dabo Sweeny or a Charlie Weis type coach. I don't think Merlins will get out of Urban's shadow, he never developed past his coattails.

Only down votes for this question is dumbfounding. Are the Gator fans doing it because they feel they're too good of a program historically to compared to Starkeville? Are State fans doing it because they feel it should be obvious they will have the better season this year?

Either way, one of the better questions on here.

I honestly haven't looked at the up/downvotes. I thought the question was legit and asked it. I am finding the responses interesting.

I think some people thought I was trolling, but I honestly was not. I thought the subject was interesting and might spark some honest discussion.....something rare on this board.

To everyone on the outside looking in, Mullen let Lashley (West Point) and Brown (Starkville) slip away from his own backyard without putting up a fight.

Mediocre coaches can get away with playing not to lose. Elite coaches find a way to win. If he continues that MO at Florida, Gator fans will show him the gate.

We WILL see, we have better coaches, better players. You have better QB, cowbells!

UF 21 - MSU 17, need more cowbell.

I have posted this several times
and here goes one more time:

Mullen did a great job at State, his recruiting was underrated and he improved the program tremendously between 2008 and 2017. I appreciate what he did.
At Florida, he will be successful but it will not be overnight. Judging by some of the UF posters on here, he will be gone before he gets to enjoy the fruits of his work. Why you ask? His offense is very difficult to master and it will take several years of development for it to reach its potential. If the Gator Nation is patient then look out down the road.

Below is my prediction provided UF is patient enough to allow the football program to develop:

2018: 5-7 maybe 6-6 with an outside shot at 7-5. (Struggle mightily)

2019: 6-6 maybe 7-5 (struggle but improving)

2020: 7-5 maybe 8-4 (continued improvement)

2021: 8-4 maybe 9-3 (corner is turned)

2022: 9-3 or better (rolling)

2023 and beyond , a power house and look out SEC and nation.

So 6-6 in year 2 at UF even though he went 9-4 in year 2 at MSU with Chris Relf?

2010 team at State was loaded with talent on offense and defense. Relf was a guy who improved over the three years but that year he was surrounded by great talent.
Defense was excellent.

If you look beyond 2011, were decent but not great in 2011-12-13. The development took time and was uneven at times.

Florida will be more of a gradual improvement over a 4-5 year period but after that it will be sustained for years to come.

Patience is needed though. Winning is not just about talent. Your guys have to develop confidence as well. Mental toughness.
Those attributes sometimes take several years to evolve.

If this is his record at Florida in year 4 he will be shown the door. I doubt if any Florida fans will disagree with me.

This is an asinine statement, we have won National Championships there is no need to develop a program here. He’s in a top 3 state for talent, at a school that is willing to spend whatever it takes to get good again. He needs to win sooner rather than later, or he’s not the man for the job, SEC Championship by year 4, or he can find somewhere else to coach. Lowered expectations don’t help anyone.

I hope you’re wrong but it doesn’t look good at the moment. We’ll see if he’s up too it. We’ll keep trying until we find one that is I guess.
