How is it complicated?
A1/B1/C1/D1 rivals
A2/B2/C2/D2 rivals
A3/B3/C3/D3 rivals
A4/B4/C4/D4 rivals
Not only do you play your pod members, you also play your other 3 rivals. There's 6 games each team will have annually.

No one will be able to come up with a Pod system maintains rivalries better than this:
Alabama - Auburn, Tennessee, Miss State
Arkansas - Texas, Missouri, Ole Miss
Auburn - Alabama, Georgia, Miss State
Florida - Georgia, South Carolina, LSU
Georgia - Florida, South Carolina, Auburn
Kentucky - Missouri, Vanderbilt, Tennessee
LSU - Ole Miss, Florida, Texas A&M

Missouri - Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kentucky
Oklahoma - Texas, Missouri, Texas A&M

Pods are Dumb
quote:
A pod system keeps a good number of the rivalries but also allows everyone to play everyone home and home every 4 years.
How does 3 permanent + 6 rotating not accomplish this? 3 permanent allows you to tailor each team’s rivals.
Alabama and Auburn should play.
Auburn and UGA should play.
Alabama and UT should play.
UT and Vandy should play.
Pods can’t accomplish that.
Pods CAN accomplish this.
Each team has 1 rival in each of the other pods:
A1/B1/C1/D1 rivals
A2/B2/C2/D2 rivals
A3/B3/C3/D3 rivals
A4/B4/C4/D4 rivals
Now pair up the pods yearly
Y1 - AB & CD
Y2 - AC & BD
Y3 - AD & BC
Everybody now has 9 conf. games.
ex. for team A1:
Y1 - A2, A3, A4, B1 (rival), B2, B3, B4, C1 (rival), D1 (rival)
Y2 - A2, A3, A4, C1 (rival), C2, C3, C4, B1 (rival), D1 (rival)
Y3 - A2, A3, A4, D1 (rival), D2, D3, D4, B1 (rival), C1 (rival)
I guess you'ld say mine has 6 perm. & 3 yearly rotating.

Alabama doesn’t like pods because they want Vandy and Tenn as their permanents.
In contrast, I'm sure Auburn would like to avoid Vandy, considering their series record is tied 21-21.

Pods are literally just the simplified version of the system you are describing.
Here’s the complicated version you want:
Texas: LSU, A&M, Oklahoma
Oklahoma: Arkansas, Texas, and Mizzou
Arkansas: Mizzou, Texas A&M, and Oklahoma
Texas A&M: Texas, Arkansas, and LSU
Mizzou: Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Kentucky
Ole Miss: LSU, Vanderbilt, and Miss St
LSU: Texas A&M, Ole Miss, and Texas
Miss St: Ole Miss, Kentucky, and Alabama
Alabama: Miss St, Tennessee, and Auburn
Tennessee: Vanderbilt, Alabama, and Florida
Auburn: Alabama, Georgia, Florida
Florida: Auburn, Georgia, Tennessee
Georgia: Florida, Auburn, South Carolina
Vanderbilt: Tennessee, South Carolina, Ole Miss
Kentucky: Miss St, south Carolina, and Mizzou
South Carolina: Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Georgia
Here’s the complicated version you want:
Texas: LSU, A&M, Oklahoma
Oklahoma: Arkansas, Texas, and Mizzou
Arkansas: Mizzou, Texas A&M, and Oklahoma
Texas A&M: Texas, Arkansas, and LSU
Mizzou: Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Kentucky
Ole Miss: LSU, Vanderbilt, and Miss St
LSU: Texas A&M, Ole Miss, and Texas
Miss St: Ole Miss, Kentucky, and Alabama
Alabama: Miss St, Tennessee, and Auburn
Tennessee: Vanderbilt, Alabama, and Florida
Auburn: Alabama, Georgia, Florida
Florida: Auburn, Georgia, Tennessee
Georgia: Florida, Auburn, South Carolina
Vanderbilt: Tennessee, South Carolina, Ole Miss
Kentucky: Miss St, south Carolina, and Mizzou
South Carolina: Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Georgia

Now, the next step would be to create the pods. If, for example, you put Alabama & Auburn in the same pod, then you'll have to give each of them a rival from the other pods that aren't a part of that team's "trio" you listed. This way, when any 2 pods are paired up, the team's rival from the other 2 pods are still on their respective schedule.
My other post breaks this down.

Pod balance. Each year you play 1 traditional power form each pod and 1 non traditional power from each pod. The only pod that is really messed up is Bama/AU/UT pod and TA&M gets elevated as one of the traditional power teams in their pod even though they don’t deserve it.

You'ld pair up pods yearly & the winner of each duo is the SEC contestant.
Y1 - pods AB winner vrs. pods CD winner
Y2 - pods AC winner vrs. pods BD winner
Y3 - pods AD winner vrs. pods BC winner
The soonest you could see a repeat in the CG would be in 3 years.

Sadly the SECCG is about to be as relevant as conference tournaments in basketball and baseball
Well the SEC should say the SEC Champion gets an automatic to the Playoff and 1 of the top 4 Seeds. That way it still has value and meaning.

Pods are Dumb
quote:
There is no way to do Pods without killing rivalries.
4 tm Pod + 1 perm rival and 10 game conf schedule could keep most important rivalries, offer an even home and away scheduling split, and ensure a H and A matchup vs all other SEC teams over a 4 year period.
Best two conf records go to SEC CG. Use head to head, then final CFP reg season poll as tiebreakers.
HOW are you creating a 10 game schedule with 4X4 pods?
Posted on 7/22/21 at 9:20 pm to JPLSU1981
How's that any different than division champs?

No pods are 4 divisions. 3 permanent means every team has its own permanent opponents.
In a conference with 16 teams, how many teams do you imagine are in those pods that you'd be playing every year. :)

You'd still get Auburn bitching about having to play Alabama, Georgia, and I guess Florida or LSU every season.

That goes to how you set up the pods.
But, if you give each team 1 rival in the other 3 pods, then majority of the schedule is automatically filled out.
SEC Pod 1
Alabama
Tennessee
Auburn
Vanderbilt
SEC Pod 2
Oklahoma
Texas
Missouri
Arkansas
SEC Pod 3
Louisiana
Texas A&M
Mississippi
Mississippi State
SEC Pod 4
Georgia
Florida
Kentucky
South Carolina
You gave this example. Let's choose Alabama since they're in slot #1.
Game 1 - Tennessee (Pod 1 member)
Game 2 - Auburn (Pod 1 member)
Game 3 - Vanderbilt (Pod 1 member)
Game 4 - Oklahoma (Pod 2 rival)
Game 5 - LSU (Pod 3 rival)
Game 6 - Georgia (Pod 4 rival)
If you have a 9 game conference schedule, you've filled out 2/3 of the Tide's opponents each year.
But, if you give each team 1 rival in the other 3 pods, then majority of the schedule is automatically filled out.

No, 3 permanent rivals is not a pod. A pod system is a method of rotating divisional alignment where the league has two divisions the composition of which changes every year as the pods rotate through their combinations. It is an unnecessary complication to satisfy an NCAA rule regarding the requirements for staging a conference championship game that is now obsolete.
We can have a conference championship game matching the teams with the two best records without having to break into divisions.

Bama does not like it because it would force them to play uga and Florida in the regular season every 4 years instead of every 20.

we cant let the arkansas-mizzou rivalry die

Pods offer no benefit over giving every team 3 permanent opponents.
What about playing the entire conference every 2 years and having an extremely balanced schedule?

I get that it won’t be played every year, but every other year is still pretty damn common.

I’d say this is preferable to losing a game like Auburn-UGA, but it’d take two more years to rotate home and away through every team.

You play your Pod each year (3 games)
Play your 1 x perm opponent (1 game)
6 conf games remain. Those waterfall on the schedule for remaining 11 opponents. All non-pod/perm opponents play at least twice over 4 yrs; the waterfall pits one matchup 3 times over 4 years. But, it all works out.
