A Rice running back who holds a unique place in Alabama’s football lore has died.
The College Football Hall of Fame and Rice University announced Dicky Maegle’s death on Tuesday, reporting the former All-American died on Sunday at the age of 86.
Maegle set a Rice record for rushing yards in a game when he ran for 265 yards and three touchdowns on 11 carries in the Owls’ 28-6 victory over Alabama in the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 1, 1954. It’s also the most rushing yards that the Crimson Tide has allowed to an opposing player in a game.
Maegle scored on runs of 75, 95 and 34 yards against Alabama, even though he didn’t reach the end zone on the longest of those touchdowns.
With Rice leading 7-6 in the second quarter, Maegle broke loose from the Owls 5-yard line. But as he sprinted down the field, Alabama’s Tommy Lewis came off the bench – without his helmet -- and tackled him at the Crimson Tide 40-yard line before hurrying back to the bench. The officials awarded Rice a touchdown on the play, and Maegle still holds the Cotton Bowl record for the longest run from scrimmage.
A fullback who scored the Tide’s touchdown against Rice and served as a team captain, Lewis famously explained: “I guess I’m just too full of Bama.”

Interestingly, Rice and Alabama have only faced off three times in history, one meeting per year from 1954-1956.
Alabama lost all three meetings.

Kind of interesting. I wonder what would happen in today’s officiating.

This source is some guy on wikipedia so take it for what it is worth.

What happens if there is a player running for a touchdown and an opponenet comes off of the sideline to tackle him? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.253.111.252 (talk) 06:24, 3 January 2010 (UTC)
Referee's discretion. It falls under the general heading of palpably unfair acts. The referee can enforce any penalty he deems appropriate, which would likely be to award a touchdown. —C.Fred (talk) 07:11, 3 January 2010 (UTC)
Oddly enough, that exact situation occurred in the 1954 Cotton Bowl between Alabama and Rice. Rice player was running down the sideline and an Alabama player came off the bench and tackled him on the 42 yard line. Referee signaled touchdown even though the ball never actually made it to the endzone. Even though this has only happened once (in major college and pro football), the general rule is as mentioned above: it would be up to the ref. I can imagine a situation where it would be plausible that someone might be able to catch the runner and the person on the sideline merely interfered with him allowing other players to catch up. In that instance, I can imagine a 15 yard unsportsmanlike or illegal participation penalty being enforced as opposed to an automatic touchdown.

OMG… that was probably the first game on TV I ever saw. I was 10 and visiting step grandparents in Ky. I was wearing my cub scout uniform, watching at cousin’s house. I walked back home after the game feeling rotten.
Time does move on faster and faster… and you young people…quiet down and get off my lawn.

Alabama would’ve “luckily” had Tom Ritter reffing. He would’ve called a face mask due to the loss of helmet.

The ref (Tom Ritter) would get on the headset to speak to the SEC office in Birmingham. Steve Shaw on the other end would review the tape and determine that the replay was unclear because the TVs were not High Definition and award Bama the ball.

In about 1975, Fairhope high school, Alabama, was playing a play-off game against a Mobile team, maybe Murphy, in Ladd Stadium in Mobile. The star Fairhope player was the QB who also played Safety.
In the first half he intercepted a pass and returned it for a TD. In the second half late in game he intercepted another pass and was returning it, weaving into the clear after 30 yards, possibly heading for a go-ahead TD when an opposing player came off the sidelines and tackled him (hurting Fairhope’s star 2-way lineman on play).
The Mobile refs called a 15 yd penalty at point of foul and Fairhope failed to score, lost game by 6 pts.
I drove back to Fairhope with some really angry people.

Same here. I thought Johnny Manziel might have passed away for a second.

It would be reviewed a million times somehow costing Arkansas to lose.
