On Jan. 31, 1970 Pete passed Oscar Robertson's NCAA career scoring record of 2,973, finishing his LSU career 7 weeks later with 3,667 career points. Robertson's record lasted less than 10 yrs. Pete's record still stands 50 yrs later. Pete would have even more significant points had freshmen been eligible to play on varsity teams back then. He only scored less than 30 points in 6 of his career 83 varsity games. He finished that night with 53 points on 21 of 46 shooting, with 12 assists. Those 53 points doesn't even rank among his top 14 single game efforts. There will never be another like him.

My all-time favorite LSU player. Although he was a little before my time, he greatly influenced my views on the game. He's also a big reason why I'll always think of LSU as a basketball school, first.

Pete was a heck of a ball handler and shooter. He was fun to watch.

His men's hair spray commercial was pretty good as well.

Liked him a lot great player. If three point line was in play no telling what the point total would have been.

Dale Brown, several yrs ago, researched potential 3 point shots by Pete and came up with a higher PPG average in the 50's. And Pete faced every known defense known & as noted, had only a small number of games in which he scored less than 30 points.

Never.

There are some records that will never be broken. There are others that will never be threatened. "Pistol" Pete Maravich’s 44.5 points per game average (1,381 points in 31 games) during the 1969-70 season, an NCAA high by a mile, probably will stand forever. That's not some imprudent hyperbole about a player who dominated a previous era.

Former Houston and NBA star Elvin Hayes averaged 36.7 PPG in 1967-68 (1,214 points in 33 games). That’s the No. 2 spot in NCAA Division I history. Doug McDermott won the Wooden Award last season after scoring 934 points in 35 games (26.7 PPG). Maravich topped him by more than 400 points.

And he did it without a 3-point line.

I bet LSU didn't have to make Pistol a strong arse offer for him to take the court.

Dude was a special player.

Maybe the greatest college player ever. He was truly amazing.

Excellent SEC Storied story about his life. It's sad about his mom.
