Because last year's D1 stat rankings were all thrown to hell because there weren't any inter-conference games.

The SEC had way more than that in the advanced analytics

F+ Defense Rankings
2. Georgia
8. Alabama
20. Texas A&M
39. Kentucky
42. Florida
43. Mississippi State
48. Tennessee
51. Auburn

8 teams in the Top 51

He really went out on a limb here.

I mean if those are the four best what can you do? Those 4 have consistently made the playoffs

And they're rediscovering the value of defense. At a time when the big SEC programs are increasingly focused on offense.

I don't understand why some SEC banner carriers are following the blueprint that made the Big 12 irrelevent.

I echo that same sentiment, but I also feel like last year was an anomaly in terms of defense due to lack of practice (COVID).

As SOG mentioned, Alabama's should be improved this year, and while I don't expect 2011 levels to return any time soon for anyone, it should hopefully be better across the board in the SEC with some overall return to normalcy off the field.

In general it's just harder to play defense now. Saban and others have said it - what defines a great defense is just different now than it was 5-7 years ago.

It's hard for a lot of us who grew up with defensive programs to deal with, but it's the way the game is.

I like Phil Steele but there is no way in hell Oklahoma is better than Alabama.

I tend to agree, but it's not exactly a hot take to have them preseason #1. They essentially have the least questions around what is known at this point in time.

In 2015 you still had GA playing outdated prostyle with gimps for QBs, Florida with the softest offense and team they'd had in the modern era, LSU with awful QB play. Hell Alabama won a title with Jacob Coker just handing off to Derrick Henry all the damn time. Defenses weren't getting asked to do much. You can say that defenses are getting worse in the SEC, but the bowl games paint a whole different picture. The only two games where SEC defenses got torched were the two losses, with Florida losing big to one of the best offenses in the country, and Auburn being awful.

No doubt, and it is hard to accept.

Like any trend though, I would expect DCs to eventually catch up somewhat to what these offenses are exploiting, maybe along with some rule changes down the line.

Either way, I enjoy it, but I don't like it.

That's a fair point about 2020. I'm interested to see the advanced analytics, do you have a link?

How does he do it? The top 4 in college football are so hard to nail down these days.

Definitely

F+ Rankings - 2020 CFB

I think the biggest difference in the modern SEC and the 2010s Big XII is that a lot of those programs in the Big XII openly did not care about defense as anything other than a turnover creator. They didn't put their best athletes over there. They didn't recruit NFL players. that isn't the case in the modern SEC.

I agree it doesnt take an "expert" to name the top 5 or top 10 in todays college football . I buy the magazine because it covers every team in college football and gives you plenty of historical against the spread data to study if you like to fire with the bookies as i do .

In reading his summary of Oklahoma he believes they will be much better on defense this year and out of the top4 the only team with the QB returning . He likes their special teams and just sees them as a very balanced team . I could see them being very good but would not shock me if they ran into problems when they play Iowa St and /or Texas ...we shall see

I am curious about Bama this year. In the past, we knew about the QB position. Wide open this year.
