Leach might have lucked out more than anyone in the US with all this fricking nonsense that’s been going on in the country.

Some people don’t keep up with sports a lot, so I won’t hold it against you. State has a possible 1st or 2nd round QB this season... State has exactly what they need at QB.

For Leach, it is a matter of reps. His air raid is a handful of actual plays, with multiple reads by the receivers. Up to the QB to find the open guy. A receiver runs to a spot, reads his d and adjust his route accordingly. Kinda funny to compare coaches with their two sided, laminated, legal size game play sheet & Leach with a handwritten index card on the sideline.

I would be with you if there wasn't going to be extra practices but it's looks there will be 2 weeks of extra practices to makeup for spring ball. I'm going with 7 wins. LSU fans think A&M is garbage so I'm going to put that game as a tossup.
State has 2 auto wins:
New Mexico
Alabama A&M
State has 2 likely wins:
Arkansas
Tulane
State has 4 toss ups:
NC State
Kentucky
Missouri
Ole Miss
Guarantee losses:
Alabama
A&M
LSU
Auburn
6 wins is pushing it for State

It’s a team that will improve drastically as the season goes on.

Thought that Costello was hurt all the time and got beat out.
When did he throw for a million yards ?

Dude, most of us think A&M could win 9 or 10 games this year. They have a much friendlier schedule and are set up with returning talent to have their best season in a long time as long as they don’t have major injuries.

I don't know. That TT team he had at #1 was pretty damn good.
That TT Team never got past #2 in the BCS, AP, Coaches, or Harris polls. And they finished #12.
I'm betting that was a really mediocre team on paper, too. I don't think Tech ever recruited amazingly. Leach might very well be walking into the best offense he's ever had on paper, but the quality of his competition is absurdly beyond anything he's had to face. He has three active NC-winning HCs to play every year in the SEC West, and a fourth one who finished as runner-up.

I don't know if Miss St will actually get the win but I would absolutely bet money they will scare the bejesus out of a top10 team. no idea if that's gonna be Alabama, LSU, Auburn, or A&M but if any of these fanbases go into their game without at least some unspoken anxiety, they aren't paying attention or they aren't smart.

I really like the potential of Costello and Hill in this offense.
I have no dang clue what to expect from State's receivers. They've been probably the worst crop of receivers in the SEC since 2017. There are some new faces with a lot of upside (Shavers and Heath specifically) and some returning guys who aren't totally useless, but it's hard to wrap my mind around what I've seen from State at receiver the last few years and now they'll be expected to catch the ball at a minimum 30-40 times a game.
A lot depends on the defense as well, I like the first team guys but depth is a pretty big concern, and for all the talk of adjusting to the Air Raid, I tend to think adjusting to a 3-3-5 defense may be an even bigger transition. I like the Arnett hire at DC but some patience may be required.
I've said all along they are a 6 to 8 win team and I still think that. My guess is they upset somebody that most aren't expecting them to (A&M or Auburn is my guess) but also have a head scratching loss somewhere because that's kinda what you get with Leach.

I won't say Costello got beat out but his 2019 didn't start off that hot and his back-up outplayed him enough to take the job. He had a solid 2018 season. I think the 1st/2nd round is just hype stuff but he's probably draftable. Better than any other options Leach has at MSU for sure.

Leach has had a lot of guys less talented than Costello throw for a ton of yards in his system. Different leagues, I know, but it's not like every defense in the SEC is good. State may struggle to score against the Bama's and LSU's of the world (what's new?) but the Air Raid is probably going to be a real challenge for a good chunk of the conference to defend.
Do we really think Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, and Ole Miss are so good defensively that State can't move the ball on them well? I don't really believe they are, and my guess is at least one team in that October gauntlet for State will have some struggles defending State as well. Doesn't mean State wins all of those games, but the Air Raid certainly makes it interesting.

He didn't get into grad school at Stanford, so he literally had to transfer somewhere else to keep playing college football.
Threw for 3500+ yards in 2018 which would have been top 2-3 in the SEC in each of the last 5-6 years.

More talent than Wazzu or Texas Tech but also going up against the toughest talent he will ever face as well, proportionally I doubt it's much different for him. He's at a talent disadvantage in the majority of his games against competition at all his stops.

And if you look at Leach's record against teams that are (on paper) more talented he's one of the best in the business in leading teams to punch above their weight. A&M recruited so much better than him and he still took about 2 out of every 3 games against them. Same with Oregon and Stanford when he was at Wazzu, particularly after the first couple years as he inherited a team that only won 9 games in the previous 4 years under Wulff.

You realize that Washington State's RB1 caught 86 passes? He rushed for 817 and 11 TDs and caught 86 passes for 600 and 5 TDs. I expect Hill to have similar stats. The air raid short passes are like handoffs. just gives the RB more space to create in.

I'm still in awe of all these football experts who think Leach and the air raid meaning running 5 wide go routes 60 times a game.
