The writers may have us at 10-11 wins based on eyeballs, but Vegas is using actual computations/odds by studying our schedule (brutal,) past history, and other data.
The truth is probably somewhere between the two.

They won 2 games they had no business winning last season, outgained 406-212 @ Bama and 456-351 @ Tenner. Also easily could have lost any of Auburn/Mizzou/LSU(4 point game w/o Nussmeier)

Let me reverse what you said. We won 10 games without much offense. Imagine a completely revamped offense along with a better defense. Decent offense that produces leads allows D to take more chances. We played a lot of basic D during games to prevent a big play which gave up more yards during drives. If O improves then D can play aggressive.
I predicted 10-2 and like all teams, there will be games you could win close and games you could lose close. The fact we won close games is a positive not a negative like you say.

What exactly points to the offense being totally revamped? It's the same OC running the same offense that was built around the same QB at Wazzu that was brought over to OU last year
There may be hope the OL is much improved, but the pieces say that's still very much tbd

you also had a ton of breaks go your way. Auburn returned scoop and score and illegal TD to win. Bama missed FG, Tenn about to go up 14-0 when stripped and scored.
LSUs 3rd team throwing in the endzone to win at the end of the game.
You just never know if that repeats. You could be better on paper but 8-4. Happens every year and will happen to teams this year with a 9 game SEC.
Who knows but my point was I havent seen one OU fan pick less than 10 wins despite a 7.5 over under. Most have 11 and 12 wins and think its a title team with no weaknesses.

Plus what makes anyone think Venables will even want to open up the offense? He’s a defensive minded coach that was conservative a lot last year. Call me crazy but OU could lose to Michigan, Texas, UGA, A&M and Ole Miss. They could go 7-5 or 8-4 just as easily as 10-2.

Well you will be in for a shock.
A great defense will keep you in every game. They can even win games. Now if you have a decent offense it really compliments defense.
OU offense has a consistent OLine this year with over 100 starts returning.
TE room was non existent last year and we brought in arguably the best NFL TE in history Jason Whitten He brought in 3 TE’s who are game changers.
RB room had injury bug last year and brought in some workhorses to go with some in house talent with more maturity.
WR room has been injury riddled past few years and brought in some game changers plus Satenga returns.
Mateer has all his fingers working again.
I think you will see a huge run and TE game this year. And that will open up passing lanes. The TE position is like a swiss army knife if used properly. And that room will matter for run game as well. Will provide outlet passing.
This is the first year under BV we’ll have the same OC in 2 consecutive years. Continuity matters with installs and game strategies. Its killed us to not have same OC.
Anyways, we’ll have to prove it on the field but every area is improved. Even defense.

With a tough schedule such as the Sooners have, you can always look at the best teams on the schedule and say “ that could be a loss”…..and you are right ……could be……
If you follow the developments on the Sooners you have reason to think you could win every game this coming season…..
But there is always one game where something goes wrong……maybe 2.
But with the defense we have it seems that things go wrong for the other teams almost every game…..
Having the great Venables defense and a QB without a broken hand, I am optimistic….11-1……

I agree with your UM assessment. Have no idea what to make of texas but better to play them early in October than November. FTR, A&M looks scarier to me than every game on the schedule except Georgia.

Slow that roll on the Michigan game. It’s certainly no slam dunk for OU. Whittingham isn’t simply a good head coach, he’s probably the best hire of the offseason. Michigan has talent and they are at home. The game will very well be worth watching.
