I don't know, but you've got to pay the devil his due. Gus IS pretty rank....could it be from eating all those eggs at the Waffle House?

I think the biggest issue in 2011 was that Auburn didn't have a quarterback. Gus' biggest strength (playcalling) is pretty much neutralized without good QB play.

#2 behind Saban. Gus is an offensive genius. He is the Sean Payton of college football.

not to be confrontational but I don't think that year is on Gus. It was very clear that Gus was offered the Vandy job and turned it down before that season because he wanted to stay. But in 2011 you can see Chizik's ego get in the way of allowing Gus to run his offense and that is why he bolted to stAte asap

Maybe so. I still think Gus is the only reason Auburn didn't go 4-8 or so that year. He maximized what they had, which wasn't a whole lot, except Dyer.

Gus was to Auburn from 2009-2011 what Chad Morris is to Clemson right now with Dabo imo.

I can't wait until Chad Morris leaves Clemson and Dabo Swinney is exposed a la Chizik in 2012. Dabo is without a doubt the most insufferable moron in college football.

9. Sumlin

I'm completely guilty of being biased ... but Sumlin at #9?
With the exception of LSU this year (an admittedly lousy showing), he's lost by an avg of 6 points--to some pretty solid squads.
I just don't get the characterization with which some are trying to saddle him.

2012
Florida 17-20 (3pt loss)
LSU 19-24 (5pt loss)

2013
Bama 42-49 (7pt loss)
Auburn 41-45 (4pt loss)
LSU 10-34 (24 pt loss)
Mizzou 21-28 (7pt loss)

That's silly & just a tad disingenuous.
But ok.

Without another year of being in total control under his belt, it's impossible at this point, with or without a MNC, to to say anything other than he should be ahead of Muschamp, Mullin, Stoops, Jones, and Freeze.

He has done an outstanding job turning those guys around and there is no doubt that the man can coach, however just looking at a few factors, I would like to see another year before bumping him ahead of proven guys with several years under their belts.

1. There is no talent vacuum on the plains. With 4 recruiting classes that averaged top 10, he probably would have been taking over a team that won 8 last year had 90% of the coaches in Div I been the previous coach. Talent wise , the 2012 team was nowhere near as bad as their record.

2. Will teams adjust? Gimmicky offenses seem to put up their best numbers in that first year or so. Once teams have seen it a couple times the numbers tend to drop. Paul Johnson??

3. Can the success be sustained without the on the field breaks that just typically don't happen?

If he wins the MNC, all we know at this point is he is somewhere between Larry Coker and Saban. Come back and win 10-11 in the regular season next year and he goes in the top 5. Win 8 and its probably middle of the pack.

I know Gus is not afraid to break out a gimmick or trick play but that isn't the identity of his offense. His offense is mostly read option football. What is so gimmicky about that? Moreover, the SEC should be well-versed on Gus's offense by now. It's existed in the SEC since 2006.

Gus' offense is tailored to the players he has at that time. It's hard to put it in any single category. It's been different throughout the time he's been coaching.

By gimmicky, I mean unconventional. I love option football and usually refer to Ga Tech as a gimmick offense. I guess because it is not the norm anymore.

He runs his offense a little different than everyone has seen . The elite teams will adjust, the unknown is how will he.

Can't say after just one year, but as far as coaching ability alone it's Gus. If you include recruiting, it's Nicky.

Wasn't this discussion happening after Chiz won his natty? Wait til he's coached more than just a season in the SEC. But I definitely think he's a better coach than Chiz was.

What's more important is what are you going to think of Gus in 4 or 5 years. If it takes that long.

I love the Ark fans who are still holding out hope that Gus will suddenly start to suck at coaching.

Well its not like the quality of coaches in the SEC is low, that's why Sumlin is 9th.

Saban, Spurrier, and Miles have all won National Titles. So the highest you can rate Sumlin is 4th.

Franklin has worked miracles at Vandy, so rating him above Sumlin isn't that much of a stretch.

Pinkel has actually won a division in the SEC, as well as some previous success, again not a stretch.

Gus has only had 1 year, but he won the SEC in that year.

Richt, while he hasn't won a National Title, has had some very sustained success at Georgia.

That's 7 coaches who I would for sure rank above Sumlin.

You could rank Freeze above him too and that puts him in 9th.

No one is trying to saddle him with anything, he hasn't done anything to earn being higher yet.
