If that is the case, then the Tuoy’s went out of their way to present the story in the movie as if he had been adopted as a member of the family. I guess if the truth was put in the movie (that he was signing a conservativship (which I would bet 95% of teenagers could not tell you what that is), then the Tuoy’s would look more predatory than charitable. They got their cake and ate it too ( have the world think we are wonderful when we made a calculated financial investment to the detriment of a teenager).

He admits that the Tuohys claim they received nothing from the movie, too (which he later learned was not true... thus making a stink about it years later).

Sounds to me like he was ok with not making money off of the movie and book. It's the fact that he found out someone else made money that's the problem.

They didn’t have anything from the Tuoy’s or anyone else outside of Michael Oher and his lawyer. That shitty journalism and is a huge reason this country is divided. We only get one side of the story

The Tuohy’s were asked for comment and didn’t issue one, what is ESPN supposed to do? Not run a newsworthy story because one side (probably wisely) doesn’t want to fight this out in the press?

Blaming the press for Americans being generally stupid is a huge reason this country is divided.

They sold the rights to the story. They had nothing to do with how he was written in the movie. They’ve even said they aren’t a fan of that portrayal

He was only OK because he was told that he got the same deal as his "family".

I can see how an 18 year old or 24 year old would take that approach. Family means something.

Unfortunately, he later discovered what a conservatorship really was. And he discovered that he has no legal family relationship with the Tuohys.

I can also see how that changes things (in addition to the fact that the Tuohys did make money and residuals).

You do realize he went on Fox News to promote his book right? Did the democratic party want him on Fox News also?

Tennessee is still pissed about us paying him more and hiring Freeze as a coach to get him to sign with us. Coach O threw a lot at him and the Tuoy’s to get that deal done

This whole thing wreaks of a shakedown for a cash grab. The timing of this with the release of his book isn't a coincidence.

I agree. I told my wife this and she thinks I am just siding with the family because I don't want to think negatively of them. This doesn't change the fact that I think the whole thing was shady from the get go, with them being boosters and Hugh Freeze just happened to be his high school coach ad then his college coach.

Was he taken advantage of? Only in the sense that this family wanted him to attend their school -- circumventing NCAA rules, but that's common at Ole Miss.

Would he have been successful had they not intervened? Tough to tell, but probably not.

Still shady though.

The SOL on fraud, which is essentially what he's alleging, starts to toll when the person defrauded knew or should have known of the fraud. That's going to be a tough road to hoe for something that happened almost 20 years ago, which is when this "conservatorship" was entered into. It's more likely that Oher is SOL even if his claim does have merit than the Tuohys being fricked.

Downvoted for confusing me with two different SOLs in same paragraph.

Wasn't it in the movie that they didn't adopt him because he was about to turn 18?

How I view this, personally?

A rich as hell person is going after other rich as hell people for money. I don't really feel sorry for a rich person getting shorting money from other rich people.

A grown man that has made 34 million dollars being viewed as a victim because he didn’t get a couple hundred thousand dollars is wild to me

not including any endorsements, appearance fees, book signing bonus/future sales, etc.

If I found out about this while he was still in college.....then yeah I'd probably care about it.
