The key difference was that the coach changed the class to fit the players, UNC did not
Maybe I'm missing some details... it was a basketball coaching class... it's long enough ago that most of the original details have long since vacated the premises in my head... will see if I can find a good recap... I just haven't seen anything indicating that UNC was substantively different on the class front... and the recruiting violations were ticky tack at best... definitely did not warrant a 2 year post season ban.

Had there never been a cloud over OM and Hugh freeze was still there, do you think they only win 6 games?
Honestly? Difficult to say. Freeze not being there does "stem" from this, but ultimately was fired for issues unrelated to the actual investigation (hooker calls).
They were lucky to win a couple (UK/Miss St), unlucky to lose the Arky game... Probably a ceiling of 8 wins this year... would they have been there if the NCAA cloud hadn't hammered their last recruiting cycle? Who knows.

For a bigger program, its hurt but doesnt kill, for the smaller ones it hurts. They need to bring in as many players as possible to weed out the bad ones, having limits hurts.
This punishment wasnt a program killer, but the "crimes" didn't warrant that either.
Agree to disagree. Not sure it's fair to put it in context of Ole Miss vs Auburn vs Alabama etc... X results in Y... if this case is the precedent, it now tells larger programs that the impact of getting caught from an actual NCAA punishment standpoint is meh... handling the PR of course is drastically different.
And if you're smaller, you have less to lose... if I'm USF or UCF, let's say... go about it smarter than was done at Ole Miss and could easily work your way into the picture as the Boise St type program that gets plucked up by another conference during future expansion...

Also, no wins are vacated until after their appeal is heard. Of course some dumbass already changed things on Wikipedia.

Basically coach had a class, rules, and syllabus. The players failed to do anything, so he changed some of the rules to aid them, but they still failed to do anything so he gave them passing grades.
At UNC it was just an easy class that was known to everyone, they didnt change the class rules or syllabus to pass the players. It wasnt a class that should be in any level of a school, but it still was available to everyone and not made special or differently enforced for players

Their recruiting has taken a hit for two years now(take away the violation aspect of recruiting) They have been sliding since this first came out. Had none of this happened, they would currently be in a better place with HF

if this case is the precedent
I dont think it is in the slightest. However comparing to other programs is hard since they had other issues and recent violations

but smaller school get the scraps, those scraps are unknown, you have to take a big pile and hope there is still some meat somewhere

I'm by no means an expert on NCAA scholarship rules, but I wonder if they were taking into account the 25 scholarship "hard limit" going into effect next year? Once OM has their scholarship allotment back, it's not like they can have one huge 30+ recruiting class to replenish the roster, right? They're stuck going at it 25/year? I may completely misunderstand how that works, granted, but maybe the NCAA thought a higher scholarship total with this new rule in place would be overkill? It's still prolly not super impactful even with that in mind, though.

You have it right. IIRC once the sanction's time passes, they still cannot oversight or backcount to get back to 85 so it now takes longer to recover.

I just heard Little is riding around Oxford in a new whip from Cannon Motors.. Wonder how he got that?

These sanctions are light compared to other programs in the past.
But the obvious reasoning behind this is the money generated by big time college football. Auburn losing 33 scholarships is football's version of grandpa walking 13 miles to school, uphill - both ways, and in the snow. The NCAA will never come down hard on schools like they used to.
The bottom line is this - for all that came out about ole miss, the NCAA basically didn't touch Freeze.

quote:False. They have only reduced 3 the last 2 years, and have 10 more over the next 2 years. Then they can't oversign after that to get back to 85 total with the new rules. Plus, the ones that can transfer.
Well, most of the scholarship restrictions are already in place. After next season, we are back to having the full allotment of scholarships.
Ole Miss will be at 70 scholarship players in 2 years.
Posted on 12/1/17 at 4:29 pm to GeauxTigersLee
Ole Miss is wining with 45-50 solid players today. They will have to work really hard on their walk-on program going forward.
