I myself, and UGA, are very grateful for the opt outs.

That was clear for awhile now.
Nice troll though.

I wasn't expecting a Big Dance bid this season or anything but a winning record, picking up a W in the SECT, having a win over a team that got into the NCAAT, and playing several other tournament teams close is an improvement over the Crean years.
This is a pretty solid field

It pisses me off Oklahoma declined the NIT invite. What a freaking joke and embarrassment. Who the hell turns down more basketball? Unless the transfer portal plays a role. Still, so damn stupid.
I agree mostly. But some factors may be in play. Coach asks players if they want to play and a majority of players decline. Now what? Portal opens tomorrow so perhaps some plan on leaving.
Used to be a good way to build on for next year. But portal changed that and rosters are churned pretty fast nowadays. So it means less. 3 players were banged up late season. Make NCAA they play but for NIT maybe not worth it.
I want to see them play and get bench players time. But my guess is most players just not invested in it.

Sounds like we have some players on the fence about leaving. Going on a mini-run here might convince to stay you would think

NIL and what other teams look like after NBA declarations and other transfers will decide that, not making it to Indianapolis for the NIT Forgotten 4.

I don't like this either. Just makes the season, which has had some wonderful moments, feel like a huge waste of time. The NCAA tournament is certainly hugely important in all facets, but it is not the be-all-end-all of a basketball season. Really a shame.

I don't care for the opting out, whether it's NIT or football bowl games. You want fans to care (pay money and watch the team), but quit when you don't have the season you wanted. It's just not a good dynamic to keep support.

Any real program would turn it down.
Only the absolute scrubbiest of the scrubs would accept.

I think there are 2 sides:
1. Fans want to see their team play and compete. Extra practice for junior players.
2. Injury risk for starters - its possible players were asked and declined to play. Rosters are small compared to football so it doesn’t take many declining to realize you don’t have enough to play. It actually costs money. Yes, schools have to pay to play in NIT.
Here’s a tweet from Trea Young replying to the OU official notice of declining NIT:

@TheTraeYoung
Respect.!
Wish we could’ve used the NIT money from being the #1 seed to spend on these HS kids.. still sounds crazy I’m even saying it but damn!
I still respect this though, don’t care what anybody say.. nobody watching that NIT (insert poop emoji here, this site shows as ?)

I think a senior or a bench/role player has earned the right to continue playing if they got an invite.
If players want to opt out, more power to them. But don't take away everybody's chance to keep playing.

You are missing the point. You need at least 8 players to really play a decent game. What if enough players opted out (when asked by coach)? The coach/school is not going to name them or even suggest that but will send out a politically correct notice of declining and expressing disappointment.
Its likely the coach asked players prior, if we miss NCAA and get NIT invite, would you play. In the case of OU, they had 3 players injured missing their last game. It was said had they made NCAA all 3 would have played. But it’s likely they declined the lesser NIT. OU was 18-5 at full strength. So its also likely the coach worked with Admin ahead of time to let them know what they would do if making or missing NCAA. Thats why the letter they posted was ready shortly after missing NCAA.

7 years ago, Indiana declined an opportunity to host an NIT Game in Bloomington because they didn’t want to “Devalue” the court.

I feel like his whining last night about teams declining NIT invites was specifically about Indiana, but he had to paint with a broad brush to not make it look petty.

While UGA still isn't great, it's actually progress for UGA to make the NIT. UGA hasn't made any post season tournament in the last 7 seasons.
