I love how Bill Belichick exploits every loophole/rule gray area to win. Patriots are careful never to "cheat" based on current rules but to play in the moral gray area that technically is allowed

That said, I also love that this happened to the Patriots.

Saban also addressed signal-stealing in the NFL last night. He claims he never did it. Take that for what it's worth.

Though it is rather crazy how blatant coaches were, especially in the 1990s. Saban said opposing NFL coaches would tape their practices with two cameras - one pointed at the defense and the other one pointed at him. They would then sync up his hand signals with the play the defense ran right after and used that to know what defense Cleveland would be in at any given time on Sunday.

I’d be willing to bet a handsome sum that saban has bean counters deciphering signals on tape for every opponent. If coaches aren’t switching these up then that’s on them. It can be hard to do within a game though.

The HUNH doesn’t always snap the ball at a break neck pace, for you Neanderthals wondering how they would have an advantage. They get to the line at a break neck pace, which doesn’t allow the defense to substitute. They essentially line up in a basic formation, read the defense, and then look to the sideline for the play. Alabama did it some with Hurts, but it’s the Auburn offense. Makes it more sad when Gus can’t get the right play call. The call is often made after the defense is set, so he knows for the most part what he’s up against.

I have no problems with a coach using every legal resource to win a game though, it’s what they are paid to do. Alabama would never lose if everyone approached the matchup like Les did. It was an honorable approach but he didn’t have the horses

I feel like the word "stealing" implies wrong doing. But that's just me.

Stealing a base in baseball isn't wrong, either.

That’s weird Saban runs a HUNH now.

No, he does not. While there are times when they go hurry up, the offense actually huddles to get the play more often than not. I think the biggest change to Saban's philosophy on offense is the adoption of the spread. He resisted it for the longest time but figured out after the 2013 season that it was the future of college football and adapted accordingly.

You don't actually steal the base though. You run from one to the other. The base stays firmly implanted in the ground. When you steal someone's signals, you actually steal them like you would steal candy from a store.

No you don't. You just figure out what they mean. If you don't want people figuring out your signals, do better.

What kind of candy are you stealing exactly? Pretty sure deciphering signals and stealing a physical object like candy is nothing alike

So you think it's illegal to steal bases in baseball?

You're actually somewhat correct with this statement. In war time, getting caught deciphering signals in enemy territory would lead to your summary execution, while stealing a physical object like candy would get you a talking to by the police.

Espionage has always been treated the same way. Everyone does it, but when someone gets caught, they end up losing their life.

No you don't. They still have their signals and they are free to use them.

You're terrible at this. I would just cut my losses at this point.

Auburn and Gustav cheat. Unfortunately for Auburn he is nothing more than a hick high school coach.

I disagree. If a coach is ever caught stealing signals, I am of the frank opinion that they should be taken to the edge of a forest somewhere and shot painlessly in the back of the head.
