Close look at the 6 potential first rounders this year.

Richardson- Legit, but it is risky to waste a first round pick on a RB.

Upshaw- Legit late first round pick, but will be hard to pin down a position for him at the next level due to size.

Kirkpatrick- Zero Ints last year, but the scouts claim he is physical. He has made a practice of lowering his shoulder and hitting players below the waist. If he continues to do that at the next level he will spend more time on IR than playing. AL played very few QBs that put any pressure on their secondary, so how good of a cover man is still up in the air.

Barron- best player in their secondary but played very few QBs that put any pressure on their secondary, so how good of a cover man is still up in the air. Cam and Garcia lit them up in 2010.

Hightower- May be too slow to play LB at next level

Menzie- See Kirpatrick and Barron

How can you judge these guys when they haven't even been drafted or put in the NFL yet ? They could be a bust or they could be HOFers.

We will see.

ETA: Risky to take a RB like Richardson in the draft with a first round pick ?

As for Cam lighting it up against Barron. That's an invalid argument. The dude had a torn pectoral muscle and stayed in the game. Which he should've not. You can blame that one on the coaching staff.

The scouts have 3 years of tape on Barron as a starter and 2 years on Dre. I don't think the scouts will have any trouble being able to evaluate their cover skills. And top CBs are never judged by the number of picks they have because teams rarely throw their way.

Hightower put up a great 40 time at the combine especially considering he was the biggest LB there. It solidified him as a 1st roudner. Is there a chance he could wind up at DE? Sure, but looks like most teams like him as LB right now.

That is why Dont'a Hightower was the 10th fastest LB in the combine.

Damn, he is slow.

Top QBs bama's secondary has played the last two years:

1. Cam
2. Mallett
3. Wilson
4. Garcia
5. ?

Not a lot of quality tape to watch.

I'm not sure. I've read the Ravens may use him to replace Ray Lewis and I've read that the Steelers may use him to replace James Farrior.

Those are the two things I've read the most. NFL draft is hard to predict though.

ETA: If he is moved to DE. He would be the 3rd/4th fastest DE in this years draft. Right beside Nick Perry

Draft Analysis:

Weakness:
quote:

Hightower has a big frame and can labor at times to move in extended spaces on the field. He excels within the box but likely won't run down many scat backs at the next level. He is good to defend the pass in zone but struggles to maintain coverage in man after trying to disrupt at the line. Hightower struggles to flip his hips in man looks, and there are times when he has to change direction unexpectedly. He isn't heavy-footed, but he pursues the ball with a lot of momentum and can overshoot plays at times.

I would like to see a play where a LB runs 40 yards in a straight line without having to change direction.

The 40 time is an over-rated combine judge of football speed. Especially once you move out of skill positions.

I see what you're saying but I think you're going a bit overboard. You can tell how good someone is in man to man coverage regardless of how good the opposing QBs are...especially with 2-3 years of starting film. By your logic, all Big 12 DBs are more of a known quantity than all SEC DBs because of the QBs they go up against.

Did Peterson, Claiborne, and Janoris Jenkins go up against substantially better QBs than Barron and Dre?

Let's not forget that they lost twice to Jordan Jefferson.

Let that sink in for a minute.

Not reading this Saban fap thread but to the OP, I believe Miami had 10 over a 2 year period. Could be wrong. You can look it up once you're done fapping.

I'm not saying Dont'a is a world class speedster. I'm saying that he isn't as slow as you guys make him out to be.

As for chasing down scat backs. Not many LBs can chase down scat backs like Darren Sproles. That is rare. Hightower will be fine and has a good chance to excel at the next level. Scouts always have a knock on a player.

Just like Trent Richardson, isn't fast enough to break open from defenders.

Just like Adrian Peterson is a fumble machine.

During a teleconference this morning, ESPN NFL Draft expert Mel Kiper Jr. said Alabama players, particularly the ones available in the later rounds of next week's NFL Draft, are already in future teams' good graces thanks to the preparation they received under Nick Saban. For the players who are still available during the third-seventh rounds, it's good for a "half-a-round bump up," Kiper Jr. said. "People love the fact they're coached up so well; it's basically pro coaching," Kiper Jr. said. "They're so much more well prepared for what the NFL has to offer. Those kids will benefit from their career at Alabama playing for Nick Saban."

fricking great recruiting material.

No other school will have seen as many players into the 1st round over two years as Alabama in 2011 and 2012

Right and according to some Bama posters Alabama is the only school to win 3 Crystal Footballs since the coaches started giving that out right?

2001 Miami had 4 first rounders 2002 they had 5 Thats 9 in 2 years.

In 2003 Miami had 4 first rounders and in 2004 they had 6 that's 10. and 19 in 4 years.
