You don't need a nice arena. Our venue was a dump when we went back to back and never even got renovated until a few years ago. Nate Oats has made Bama fans care about bball despite playing in an aircraft hanger.

That blood is pretty new.
I guess the long lost walk through the woods for the last 10 years make it feel not new at all.
We are definitely not bluebloods.

honestly basketball has been a pretty thing around here.
SC has a surprising amount of high school bball talent. I wonder why Ja Morant had to settle for Murray State.

It certainly helps if your program is at the bottom.

Florida had shown success though having played in a Final Four
UF opened the O’Dome in 1980 and made its first Final Four run in 1994.
Auburn opened Neville in 2010 and made its first Final Four run in 2019.
Pretty similar trajectory actually.

Bama fans on this site will tell you they’ve cared about basketball for decades. While that’s a bit of an exaggeration (they only got super serious when Auburn made our big jump up), they did have pretty decent success back in the Wimp era.
While Bama has always been less of a basketball power than they are in their own minds, they were certainly never in the cellar of the league like Auburn, Ole Miss, and Georgia were at one point in time.
Auburn and Ole Miss both built new arenas that led to very strong coaching hires… followed by the most success their programs have ever seen. Georgia should follow that model.

wonder what percentage of these are from Pearl (or in Tennessee's case, Pearl and after
88%. Pearl won 8 NCAA games, Counzo Martin 2, and Barnes has won 12. The other three are Jerry Green for the late 90s.

Pearl has won 11 of those.

Me too but except for that one year I didn't think the Sooners ever did well in the tournament, seemingly falling to a lower seed every time.

Only 13…
That makes sense though, our basketball program peaked in the early 1980s with 4 straight conference titles

UF never even made it to the big dance until 1987, which was promptly vacated by the NCAA.
Donovan deserves a statue in Gainesville.

We were a beach bum school that didn't take athletics seriously
So how was that? Being that Gainesville doesn't have a beach?

So UF has more Final 4s than UGA has tournament game wins.

Absolutely wild that all of South Carolina’s Tournament wins in a 40-year period came in one season during its run to the Final Four.
