What defines a "true student athlete"? Moreover, what defines a true student? I thought it was someone enrolled and taking classes.

Nothing has been said about that. I'd think schools would still have some ability to block a transfer to certain schools.

Yeah beacuse that would suck a lot of shite to have to constantly change your playbooks because of players throwing tizzies. I just don't think this will work without the one year rule -- or go the JUCO route.

I understand what the kids want, but this is going to make recruiting awful and like I said: There will still have to be restrictions for certain schools -- because if a Florida QB goes to FSU, or vice versa, it's going to throw a major cog in the program due to having to change playbooks/rhetoric.

Honestly, if you truly want to make it "college athletics", shouldnt the students need to actually be able to get into the school based on academic merit first?

They looked into this a while ago (70s or 80s I believe) and college presidents shied away from it because the large majority of student-athletes that would be affected by such changes are minorities and it's hard to spin raising those NCAA minimums as anything other than trying to keep minority students out of predominantly white college.

Fact of the matter is that short of fixing the US Education system (while badly needed I don't think anything more than an endless string of bandaid solutions will happen in my lifetime) nothing is ever going to be done about NCAA entrance minimums that will make them anywhere close to what colleges expect out of non-athletes.

You do realize that in exchange for all of that the recipients are basically at the beck and call of their coaches and universities 24/7, 365 days for 3-5 years? Not sure "free" means what you're implying it means. Sounds a lot to me like they are receiving housing, food, clothing, and job training in exchange for their labor. Not that they didn't sign on for all of that (they did) but let's not embellish it s though they are all living out the all-american QB1 frick fantasy every day for 4 years.

And that’s not even getting into your life on a college campus as an athlete and all the girls and free drinks that entails.

And all the snapchat videos of you being a fricked up college kid and getting a speeding ticket and smoking weed at your friend's house and seeing your name in the paper for all the wrong reasons and everyone assumes you're a dumb jock athlete and only wants to hang out with you because they can put the pics on instagram. Again, there's some cool stuff you get in exchange for the labor but it's not all that the stereotypes make it out to be. There's actual work and risk involved.

Anyone think this will ruin college football?

Why would they or the NBA or the NHL ever bother wasting money on such a venture? Like it or not, the professional leagues have a free farm system and the NCAA gets additional publicity from loyal fans being able to watch future professional stars play and develop in college. Unless congress got involved on some anti-trust level (which will also never happen because have you seen who owns the NFL franchises? The same people that bankroll most political campaigns which is how the NFL has avoided anti-trust litigation for the better part of 60 years) the NFL will never have a far league independent from college football. It would be bad for business.

The NCAA has rules limiting the number of hours an athlete can be involved in his sport, practices, meetings, etc. They are far from being at their coaches' "beck & call" 24/7. They have more free time now more than ever. More free time is not an issue.

Involved in direct contact with their coaches, yes. "Voluntary" workouts and pass skel, film sessions led by team leaders, meetings with nutritionists, tutors, sports psychologists, time in the training room for rehab, etc on the other hand....

If anyone thinks that players are only spending the NCAA mandated hour limit on their sport at any given school then they really don't know what's going on.

In the NFL at the start of 2017 there were 160 players from FCS schools. This would likely change and make FBS vs FCS Matchups untenable.
