The NCAA on Wednesday announced a pair of new proposals for 2018, one that that would limit football staff sizes to 30 and another that would move the start of football practice back to early August.
According to the proposal, FBS schools would be "required to designate 30 individuals who will participate in on-campus football recruiting activities." There is currently no limit on the number of staffers who can be involved in recruiting, and many schools have football staffs numbering several dozen.
The 30 staff members would include all on-field coaches, including the head coach, as well as 10 assistant coaches and four graduate assistants. Schools would be required to designate their 30 staff members prior to preseason practice and send a list to their conference office (staff members who leave a given school could be replaced on the list of 30 at the discretion of their athletic director).
In addition, the Division I Council is proposing a new practice start date, which would be 25 days prior to the first game of the season. For example, a team playing its first game Sept. 1 could hold its first practice Aug. 3.
With the elimination of two-a-day practices this year, schools were allowed to begin practice an extra week earlier. Some did so in late July, which would no longer be allowed under the proposed change.

LSU was clearly just beating everyone to the punch. No ST coach and the players didn't learn the plays in preparation for next years limited number of practices.
Championship.
Championship.

Why? What's the point of this? So West Poly School for the Deaf, Blind, & Women can be on the same playing field as Bama?

Everything the NCAA has done since the 1970s has been to try and level the playing field. Even if it's a detriment to the players and coaches.

No, so Mississippi State can stay on the same field as Bama.
Yall got so far ahead yall are lapping Power 5 teams now. You have to know that eventually the rest of the programs in the sport would collude to slow you down.

Sounds like a pretty easy opportunity for programs to skirt yet another rule.

So set up a recruiting office one block "off campus." Unlimited staff. It's what Bama would do.

Except there is nothing in the proposal that limits staff sizes. The only limit is on the number of staffers that can recruit.
I know you didn't write the headline, it is a straight copy/paste from AL.com but it says one thing and the story says something entirely different.
Not surprising since I'm convinced every single one of their writers was an English as a Second Language student.

This legislation still won't help West Poly draw 100,000. Sooner or later the NCAA is gonna push its cash cows into a new Org.

So if it only applies to 'on campus' then there can be an unlimited number of personel at the Dodge dealership recruiting office right?

If these people cared about the kids and getting an education they wouldn't put a restriction on the # of scholarships and let the schools decide on how many they can give. This would drastically increase the # of kids who get scholarships. Then they could make it easy for kids to transfer who feel they are stuck behind too many players and want to play at a different school instead.

Dude, they already addressed this, and had to limit scholarships for a reason. Nick Saban would get his 25, and then start giving them to players so they wouldnt sign with Auburn. Bear Bryant and John Vaught are on record as saying that's what their plan was. be real, this is a serious conversation.

That choice should be up to the kids not the coaches of other jealous teams who dont care about the kids and would be willing to greatly reduce the # of kids who get scholarships in order to help themselves.

Sorry about the loss of Nick's shadow staff.
But, in all seriousness, would this mean that teams could not pay "consultants" for "professional services" ?

And when someone go on them about it, Bear had quite a few guys on the team that were there on swimming scholarships.

No. There are already NCAA rules limiting off campus recruiting.

They have been trying to do this. They done away with 2 a days extended practice dates, so they can get in the same amount of practice time. They also want to add a week to the schedule so every team can have 2 bye weeks

But if cutting down on the "consultants" isnt apart of it then pointless. Also, I think a staff should be just enough to have a coach for all areas covered with a coach. No need to have a HC as the Special Teams coach too. Thats it, so maybe one or 2 more than now. How many can recruit can be figured out. Ohhhh have a GA or 2 is fine too. Then staff for operations purposes only.
They need to cut 3rd party sponsored camps out too. NCAA can cut a lot out, but they let so much grow under their nose. Now they can't understand why it's gotten so corrupt.
