No one going to mention that all of the games mentioned in the OP were blowouts?

Bottom line.
They need to finish the playoffs either on January 1st or no later than Jan. 10 .
Either have the semifinals on NYD or the championship NYD.

Nobody tuned in to a drawn out championship? Color me shocked.

Would it be better going head to head with the NFL playoffs, Colonel?

A lot of bad ratings in the last 5 years. I think people are disengaging from the sport. No way a national title game with Ohio State and Notre Dame would have been less than 30mil even on a Monday in the mid-2010s.

The thing is there were a lot of Monday night national title games that were much more well watched. They've been on Mondays ever since the BCS went to standalone national title games in 2006. The first one got 28.8m viewers.
The Alabama-LSU game that got "bad ratings" and necessitated a playoff (at least that was the official angle), had 24.4m viewers.
The first CFPCG was carried on ESPN instead of broadcast and had 33.4m. They averaged about 26m until the 2020 season's CFPCG.
Something has changed and it has become a trend with only the pent up demand for a Blue national title last season leading to a likely Michigan heavy viewership. At this juncture, if the national title doesn't involve a blueblood who hasn't even sniffed a national title game in a generation then I have my doubts it can get to the rating averages of the BCSCG/CFPCGs from 2006-2019.

I think Covid change the way people consume sports.
Monday game hurts.
Layoff before playoff hurts audience.
I also think when it was one or 3 games, it captured more interest bc it was more focused.
I think they may need to get the playoff started sooner and the final game should be New Year’s Day.

To put that in perspective for this board the 2011 regular season football game between LSU and Alabama (9–6 final) had 20 million viewers.

I know most of us are obsessed with sports but most people are not. This game had to compete with the Inauguration, MLK day and two teams from one small area of the country.

True...but, let's look at the championship game history since they started playoffs:
Season - Championship Game:
BCS Era
1998 - Monday - January 4, 1999
1999 - Tuesday - January 4, 2000
2000 - Wednesday - January 3, 2001
2001 - Thursday - January 3, 2002
2002 - Friday - January 3, 2003
2003 - Sunday - January 4, 2004
2004 - Tuesday - January 4, 2005

2009 - Thursday - January 7, 2010
2010 - Monday - January 10, 2011
2011 - Monday - January 9, 2012
2012 - Monday - January 7, 2013
2013 - Monday - January 6, 2014
CFP Era
2014 - Monday - January 12, 2015
2015 - Monday - January 11, 2016
2016 - Monday - January 9, 2017
2017 - Monday - January 8, 2018
2018 - Monday - January 7, 2019
2019 - Monday - January 13, 2020
2020 - Monday - January 11, 2021
2021 - Monday - January 10, 2022
2022 - Monday - January 9, 2023
2023 - Monday - January 8, 2024
2024 - Monday - January 20, 2025
There have only been 2 championship games played since its inception that didn't fall on a week night. It seems like the hype was so much bigger before the playoffs (and especially the playoff expansions) that the night the game was played didn't matter that much.

Putting college football against the NFL is a comical mistake.
We went from watching Lamar and Baltimore vs Josh Allen and Buffalo on Sunday night to watching Riley Leonard and notre dame vs Will Howard and Ohio state.
Of course people tuned out, even moreso when it became painfully apparent ND didn’t have the athletes to keep it entertaining.

Also the only real way to have a true comparison is to just look at opening quarter viewership. When you beat a team 65-7 in the natty, nobody will watch.
