There are a number of potential candidates, including Fielding Yost, Knute Rockne, Woody Hayes, and Tom Osbourne. Sure there's some others, too, I'm forgetting.
I'd go with Rockne, because not only did he win, he single-handidly changed college football forever with his innovative offensive strategies.

Saban isn't in the same ballpark as these guys. And i can't see him coaching long enough to get there.
Saban's won the same number of championships as Paterno and Bowden and did it against MUCH tougher competition. The ACC was a bigger joke than it is now when Florida State went on that long run of consecutive top five finishes and Paterno was infamous for scheduling a bunch of patsy teams when Penn State was an independent. I do agree with you that Saban won't be coaching long enough to be in that class even though he's probably better than everybody but Bryant in terms of sheer coaching ability. I see Saban having a very similar legacy to John McKay by the time it's all said and done.

I know he didn't win championships, but John Heisman had a major impact on the game. He was an early proponent of the forward pass. he also was one of, if not the first, to suggest a change from 2 halves to 4 quarters. He is also credited with developing or at least popularizing the center snap (as opposed to having the center kick or roll the ball back) and with using both guards to pull on an end run.

I mean it's definitely Rockne with 5 national championships.

I would say Rockne too, but if Saban or Meyer win two more NCs and have consistent 10 plus win seasons for the next 8 seasons I could see them being consider in that league. They won't have as long as a run, but they would have done against harder competition, and in an era with a consensus NC.
