If we’re talking nationwide there’s no way Shaq, Charles and Bo aren’t in the top 3, likely in that order.

Two of them are household names right now and the other was the most famous athlete in the world for a span.

Close. He was an All-SEC End for Alabama in 1935, a cross between a tight end and a wide receiver. He jokingly called himself the "other end" when he played on the team with Don Hutson. Hutson was an All-American and practically invented the modern wide receiver position when he played in the NFL with the Green Bay Packers. All of the records Jerry Rice ended up breaking were originally held by Hutson.

This is back when single platoon was still a thing, so defensive end as well.

“I don't know if I would recognize a photo of Bear Bryant if he wasn't wearing his hat.

I don't know if I'd recognize a photo of Johnny Majors period.

I wouldn't have recognized Archie Manning until Peyton became famous.”

This has got millennial written all over it. I wasn’t alive when Knute Rockne coached but know him every time I see a picture. I wasn’t alive when Jim Thorpe played but know who he is when I see a photo. I wasn’t alive when Paul Hornung was carrying the ball for Notre Dame but know him when I see a picture.
If you wouldn’t recognize bear, John majors or Archie manning than your little cocoon is smaller than I thought. Yes, there was a world before you were born.

Hey Boomer, Bryant has been dead for 37 years. There are generations of Americans who were not around when he was relevant. Step outside of Alabama and see how many average people can identify him from a photograph. More than half of the American population is under 40, by the way.

I wasn’t born even close to when Bryant died and would rather live practically anywhere than Alabama and I can easily recognize a picture of him.

And further more, Tebow was only relevant in college because of Urban and his offensive system and truck load of talent. No one would even recall Tebow's name had he played on 95 percent of college teams.

Tebow was a far superior college QB to Peyton there is absolutely no argument there.

Was Bear Bryant that big of a deal to the average American?”

Bo at #9?
He was the first athlete, any sport or conference, that a worldwide company marketed their entire brand around.

Clueless?! You're obviously a boomer. My bad.

Great list pops! Ra! Ra! Goooooo Archie!!!

Yes, that "Boomer" knows SEC history both old and new.

First off you're not even a real SEC team. Second, you don't know anything further back than, " Michael Sam sucks dick."

STFU, idiot.

I think you are getting name recognition confused with “famous.” People might recognize the name but probably cant tell you much about them.

The most famous individuals have done things outside of playing where they reach a wider audience. Freaking Manning just did the opening of the Olympics. Shaq is all over everything and tv, commercials, etc. He also has the added advantage that he’s huge and unmistakable.

Peyton and Shaq would undoubtedly be the most recognizable worldwide.

These days with all the sources of media it's just a different time. Shaq is everywhere, Peyton Manning is everywhere. Just focusing on the biggest sport, very few have ever been legitimate cultural icons. Joe Namath is one of those. I'd also put Bo Jackson in that category...but Namath is that #1 guy to me. Imagine if he'd had the Nike machine behind him in the late 60s.

Bunch of young pups on here. Bryant was huge in his time. Major news, not just sports, story when he retired and then passed away. No current SEC personality is in the same ballpark.

I'm not a fan of basketball, but I do think Shaq is number 1....he's a global brand at this point.

I would also argue Manziel is more well known by more people than most on this list.

I think there are two different lists. One is recognized today. The other is most recognized in their era.

Namath would be an example of someone who was an A list celebrity in his day but 99% of Gen Z’ers would have no idea who he was.

I'd agree about Johnny Majors. Archie and Bear are extremely recognizable. If we're talking all SEC athletes, I'd put Shaq, Barkley, Pistol, Livvy Dunne, and Paul Skenes on that list. Possibly Johnny Football, Caglione
