I personally think the standard was retarded. A blanket 60% winning percentage without proper context. Mike Leach was a winner wherever he went. He turned shite programs like Texas Tech, Washington State, and Mississippi State into teams that shouldn't be trifled with. The fact of the matter is, when he died his career winning percentage was .02% away from the minimum required for consideration.

He went below the standard during the Covid year when we played a slate of all SEC games. For many of those games he could have opted out because he didn't have enough players to make a full squad, but that wasn't Mike's style. A game is on the schedule, so you play.
He had gotten State to a 9-win team by year 3, and they were a young team. What would have happened next is anybody's guess, but my money is on him easily getting back over 60% the following year.

I love him but he did have a pretty average win percentage...it was not even close to HOF worthy....he also has zero conference titles as a HC.

He was a Hall of Fame character (in a good way), and a heckuva college football coach, but he was not a Hall of Fame football coach.

He could have if wasn't at such shitty programs.
But then again with NIL and the portal if he was still alive then it would be a good possibility.

Being a HofF coach is more than just wins & losses. His effect on the game, his coaching tree, this success of many of his former players are all part of that evaluation.
And has been mentioned, he was the HC at three schools whose overall success is mixed at best. None of the “elite” programs had the balls to hire him because he was his own personality and that did not fit their inflated image of themselves.
Absolutely he deserves to be in the HofF.

Surprised no Sooners have piped up here. Leach was only OC at OU one year (1999), but he established the Air Raid offense and brought in QB Josh Heupel to run it. OU won the national championship the following year with an undefeated season.

He won at three separate cow colleges that nobody else could win at. That’s what he did. Anyone can win at places like Alabama, Georgia, Texas, etc.
