Something like this makes us realize how unimportant the game itself is.

The coaches who bust their butts putting in long hours away from their families might disagree with you.

In the big picture life and death the game means nothing.

You're saying their life's work means nothing.

Yes and no. Without football you wouldn't have a clue who Mike Leach is.

Of course it wasn't his entire life, but football was a huge part of it, teaching life lessons and developing young men in the spirit of competition, teamwork, and the pursuit of excellence, all while being the pride of universities and states.

What made Leach so incredible was that despite the seriousness of all that, the guy never took himself too seriously and had a genuine wit, intellectual curiosity, and sense of humor that was un-matched by any of his peers.

a large majority of active and former coaches would say their life work isn't wins and losses, but taking boys and turning them into men.

He's saying their life means more than the work they do. It's football, not the military or Law Enforcement where the lives you protect are supposed to be of higher importance. Jeez!

Oh the game is indeed important. If not, then why the tremendous outpouring of love and support from rivals for a man who coached the game??
The game unites us as humans on a level we can grasp. It’s not extestential, or religious, or philosophical, it’s just important in our daily lives, else we wouldn’t be posting here

Edit: I do get your point, though, the game isn’t as important as life, but it is important .

I can speak to this also. My MIL had a brain bleed that ceased all brain function except in the brain stem. They kept her alive on a ventilator until we flew to Florida from Texas. We said our goodbyes and she was gone within 20 minutes of the removal of the breathing tube.

This scares the crap out of me. I have a vascular brain tumor (hemangioblastoma) the size of a grape in my right cerebellum and the doctors have instructed me to take only Tylenol for a headache being it can bleed, never really thought of it this way. Not to take anything away from the Leach family and dang sure not for attention. I find it hard to talk about because I know a lot of people are going through stuff also. Just get better Pirate!

Thread: My favorite Mike Leach story.

My dad is watching OU practice in 1999. He starts talking to Leach. Practice ends and all the coaches start jogging back to the facility. My dad asks, “need a ride?” Leach says, “Hell yeah, I ain’t jogging.”

So he gets in my dad’s car.
My dad gives him a 5 minute ride back to the facility and Leach starts talking his ear off. Eventually, he starts telling my dad about his apartment in Norman. Explains to my dad that all families should live in apartment complexes. “It’s the best place to raise kids,” he says.

“Tennis courts, a playground, a pool, other families, etc,” he goes on. He ends up sitting in my dad’s car for over an hour talking about this. Finally, my dad leaves thinking he has a new best friend in Mike Leach. The two never speak again (but my dad is a big fan of his book).

Fast forward 20 years.

I’m interviewing Leach for a story on Lincoln Riley. We start talking about me living in Norman. He tells me he once lived in Norman in a really nice apartment complex w/ tennis courts, a playground, a pool, etc. And tells me the same story as my dad.
After he finishes his theory about why apartments are the best place to raise a family, I tell him that he told my dad that same story in 1999. He says he remembers him, but I’m not sure if he really did.

But before hanging up he says, “tell your dad thanks for the ride.”

Leach is the best. A college football icon. Praying for him and his family.

Something we saw with my late MIL was that the hospital didn't want her to die in their care they really, really wanted her to go to a facility where deaths happened a lot.
And that's what happened. We barely got her there 36 hours before she passed. My demented FIL was so impressed with the dining room there that he was looking forward to going there to eat.

Theatre of the Macabre.

One encouraging point is that the doctors apparently haven’t taken Coach Leach off of any life support. This gives me some hope.

I sincerely hope that each of you take from this situation that life is fragile. We never know what will happen to ourselves and those that we care for on a daily basis. Love one another and be a positive influence.

I had Leach on a flight years ago on a flight from Dfw to Lubbock. He was a really nice guy. He was traveling with a huge trophy that they had won at Texas Tech. I’m not sure if it was a bowl trophy or a big 12 trophy but he stored it in the closet. He was a very down to earth guy, and talked to everyone. Prayers for coach Leach!

No man. It's not important. It's just enabling underprivileged young people a chance to get an education and improve their station in life for themselves and future children.

It's just teaching people to work together in a group against adversity.

Not important.
