Do you think any coach can be competitive today with a $2.5 million NIL budget?
Last year, Mississippi State football spent the least on NIL of any SEC school. They spent $6.5 million on their football team, over twice what OK St did. Mississippi State went 2-10. The average amount SEC football teams spent on NIL last season was $13 million.
So, what coach do you think would be successful with a $2.5 million budget?

Didn’t they lose Pickins’ money on bad investments or something?

He had a 10 win season in 2023 and finished ranked 16th.
He had a 12 win season in 2021 and finished ranked 7th.
Last year was a train wreck. But implying that he hasn’t had any success the past 5 years is just wrong.

Have to think if he’d died expecting NIL, he’d have set aside money for that.

I imagine a lot of this is 2023 and his years of success left them thinking he had them poised to be one of the powerhouses in that conference, and the last 15 games really let the air out of that fast.

Gundy’s sauce was building a strong team culture + discovering and developing players who’d play as upperclassman.
The develop/loyal ways of old don’t work in the NIL world.
I’m a grandpa I’m 60 Gundy rant.

That’s the part of NIL that sucks. Major programs may lose stars. But they should be able to deal with it. Schools like Oklahoma State just becoming farm systems.

I think OKST has the resources to be competitive in the Big12

Gundy WAS a good coach. I dont think he has same motivation that he used to have

Kind of funny that Pickens spent all that money in his life to build the program and now he’s gone and no one in the family cares.
This is what shocks me! T Boone would not be happy and would have make sure the NIL coffers were full. Unbelievable his heirs are crapping on his memory. He's an excellent Coach.

Pickens died in 2019. So that was before NIL became household lingo to the CFB world. But yeah I agree. If he knew the end was near, he could have set aside millions for Oklahoma State football

The entire Mid American Conference is in this same boat. Same with lower tier Big Ten schools
