Mack deserved to go on his own terms

He’s done more for UNC’s football program than any person has or probably ever will. Before he came and built that program, they were winning one game a year. And they push him out after a 6 win season, just two years removed from a conference championship appearance. Firing him like this is tasteless.

There is zero reason to fire him before the last game. Just have him announce he is retiring and show some class. Achieves the same outcome.

I wouldn’t be surprised if UNC did try that approach, only for Mack to dig his heels in and force them to fire him publicly.

True.
But the pollo need needs to fire up the coaches search board.
Chadwell or Mullins would be my pick for UNC.

Then you just table the discussion until after the last week of the regular season. Then you fire him or whatever.

I wouldn’t leave buyout money on the table either if I were him unless they were going to give it to him if he walked away.
Ask orgeron how he felt when he got fired, he asked which door did they want him to walk out of….haha

It would be funny for them to return to the absolute cellar again.

There are better HCs out there that would love to take over that football program. Kansas HC is one good example.

He forces you to push him out. I respect it more now that I know that’s just how he is.

He has had a long career. Spending some quality time on the golf course is not a bad thing. Strongly encouraging him to retire would have been better than firing him but coaches get fired all the time and most have new jobs in short order. The notable exception is Bryan Harsin.

It’s hard nowadays to feel sorry for a coach getting fired as much as they get paid for it. Good career Mack.

100% totally agree.

I appreciate what Mack did for Texas. He wasn’t perfect but he was a good CEO-type of coach and was a master at balancing the team, the alums, and the media. He represented Texas well.
That said, it seems like what’s happening at UNC is the same thing that happened at Texas. Mack dug his heels in and ultimately brought some things on himself. Obviously you want a coach like that to finish the season and end his career on a positive note, and I can’t imagine that that wasn’t what UNC preferred. But it takes some reciprocity, and if rather than agreeing to step down at the end of the season the coach throws a public tantrum, this is what happens.
Good luck, Mack and thanks for the memories.

You clearly don't understand Mack Brown's ego

Lil' Mackie was never the same after Saban ordered the vicious attack on Colt's shoulder and proceeded to embarrass him on college football's biggest stage.
Lil' Mackie lost his mind, in many ways. The severe beating made him question his validity as a coach and set Texas to wandering for a decade looking for an identity.
Texas didn't know what running the ball was in football and when Alabama ran the ball down their throats, it caught Lil' Mackie off guard as he had never experienced a team running the ball against Texas.
Overnight, Lil' Mackie changes everthing about Texas as they searched for a meaning to their existence. It was many, many years before Texas came back from the massacre they witnessed that night at the hands of Nick Saban.
Lil' Mackie never did quite make it back. He could always coach at UAB like his brother did.

When a formerly successful coach almost literally loses his mind and forgets how to do his job because of a beating, it has to mentioned how it happened.
What's wrong with that?

A job that pays 5MM a year does not owe anyone an emotional farewell.
