LSU Saban was a far cry from Gump Saban. He achieved greatness in year four and built a program, but he was ridiculously inconsistent. Unlike the revisionist historians would tell you of course. In year one (2000) he won 8 games with a roster loaded with future NFL players. I think he did a great job with that team. But the cupboard was FAR from bare.
In year two (2001) he somehow managed to win an SEC Championship WAY ahead of schedule. He still lost three games though, just for the record. That team had lots of good upperclassman (thanks Dinardo) and Jimbo had that passing game purring.
Year three (2002) was a total meltdown. Somehow, sandwiched between an SEC Championship and National Championship he managed to lose FIVE games. And was lucky to do that (Bluegrass miracle). Not to mention a colossal last minute meltdown against Arkansas (Miracle on Markham). And was outscored by the State of Alabama 62-7. SIXTY TWO TO SEVEN. Plus he melted down and bitched and moaned his way through the season and was generally unbearable.
Year four (2003) is how he is remembered, 13-1 and a National Championship. That was a dominant defense and a really great team. That was Saban's best moment at LSU and the year "the process" became legend.
Year five (2004) saw his team play like shite throughout. They were unwatchable at times, got destroyed by Georgia, and of course Saban went out like a chump to Iowa, again on a last second pass.
When Miles came in the roller coaster stopped. He won eleven, eleven, and twelve. Before he had a "bad" eight win season. Saban at LSU was indispensable for the program, but he was not "Gump Saban" by any means. He changed the mindset, he recruited well, but he lost WAY more and in worse fashion than people like to remember.

Saban's run at Alabama from '08 to '12 is amazing.
His time at LSU would be forgettable to most people if he didn't return from the NFL to coach Alabama.

Saban at Alabama and Saban at LSU are not comparable. Gumps think I'm trying to deny Alabama credit, when actually I'm doing just the opposite. He had the one epic year at LSU. But he also lost FIVE games in year three and THREE games in year five. His fifth team at LSU was pretty sad.
Saban at Alabama has been truly excellent. Miles has been a level below that IMHO . But Saban lost like a son of a bitch at LSU. And I mean in year FIVE. In a period when everybody in the West besides Auburn was down. This idea that it was some upward trend to powerhouse is silly and a glance at the actual schedule results from 2000-2004 demonstrates that clearly.
Of course a lot of people place Narrative above Truth so....

You give props to Saban winning with "a roster loaded with future NFL players". And you give props to Saban "recruiting well". But Miles winning his first 3 years, "eleven, eleven, and twelve"... think that Saban's recruits might have helped that?

As I posted earlier:
Miles winning % with Saban's players on the roster - 79%
Miles winning % without Saban's players on the roster - 77%
This is a tired argument that doesn't hold water.

It's easier to win at Alabama.

Saban went 8-5 with his own damn players in his final season at LSU with the last loss being a total embarrassment in the final seconds against Iowa.

This!! Not being a homer either... Case in point, Shula, Fran, and Dubose each had some VERY good seasons at Alabama and they WAY overachieved at times...

Of course they helped. Who disputes that. But why did Saban lose FIVE games in his third year at LSU and why did he lose THREE games in year five?
Two true things you need to know:
1. LSU had a crapload of talent when Saban arrived. All running in different directions. Saban focused that talent. But the cupboard was not bare . Those guys just had no clue how to win. Saban gave them that.
2. In year THREE and FIVE of Saban's LSU stint the team looked like a disorganized Chinese fire drill. Who was responsible for that?
The truth is that Miles easily holds his own against Saban AT LSU. Saban at Alabama versus Miles at LSU at this point is not in question. Saban at Alabama has won consistently in a way that he never did at LSU.
And I'm not sure why grown men would try to deny another man the merit that he has earned. It's a weird, cheesy thing to try to give Saban credit for Mile's achievements TEN YEARS into this thing when the man has a 78% winning percentage, a loaded roster, and the number one recruiting class at this exact moment. It just defies human rationality.

Yeah, I mixed up the 2002 & 2004 seasons. Should have fact checked first instead of going off memory.

In Saban's FIFTH year they went 9-3. They barely beat Oregon State to open the season, they got destroyed by Georgia, they beat TROY by FOUR at HOME (wtf) and they lost on a last second pass (AGAIN) to Iowa. In year FIVE.
And then Miles came in and went 34-5. Saban never approached that at LSU.

Alabama fans refuse to acknowledging 2011.
Who won at Bama?
Who beat the pac 12, big east, and sec east champs?

Damn pimp, you should be ecstatic with Les. Instead you're whining like a bitch 10 years after CNS left and Les arrived. Don't you think it's about time you face facts, CNS is inargualy the better coach and it's not even close.
Put it this way, if both announced they were availabe, which one do you think would attract the most attention and pay?
