You don't seem to understand that if the SEC is going to argue to a court that they're a responsible governing body, then they can't be out here picking and choosing which eligibility rules they want to enforce and when they want to enforce them.

They also can't be out here going nuclear on institutions that haven't broken their rules.

Those facts seem to completely baffle you, and several other dunce-cap-wearing individuals here, here for some reason.

Y'all honestly don't think the SEC has a leg to stand on? Y'all think you are smarter than the gazillion dollar lawyers on the SEC's staff? I'm pretty sure they have examined this from every angle and believe they have a very strong case. LSU's arguments here seem to be tantamount to a guy getting a speeding ticket and complaining to the officer that there were other people speeding also. The certainty with which you guys believe that LSU did nothing is astounding.

I believe that this whole situation will eventually be dropped (it really is a silly pissing contest between the two institutions), but LSU ends up on double-secret probation behind the scenes and on a short leash. Aren't y'all at least just a little concerned about how quickly Kiffin brought the drama? We all predicted it, but I figured it would take a couple of years.

Is one player's ineligibility better or worse than another player's ineligibility or are all ineligible players illegal participants? If there are variations as to the legality of rostering and playing these players, where can I find this black and white explanation in the NCAA/SEC bylaws?

Is Chambliss ineligible according to the NCAA/SEC? Is Ole Miss playing him?

Don't confuse the tards with facts.

It's also going to be continually pointed out by the likes of me that this "signed a contract" angle was something instituted by the SEC in a hasty attempt to draw a ... not a line in the sand ... But a circle in the sand around LSU and 2 Ole Miss players.

And, despite that underhanded shite, LSU still hasn't broken any rules.

That's one of the most embarrassingly inaccurate and biased articles I've ever read

Do you guys read that and really think it represents reality?

Or, …. It looks like mismanagement by SEC leadership …. even way before Lane/LSU.

Between Sankey and Disney, they took a once great and respected product and drove it completely into the ditch.

Blaming LSU is just lazy misdirection … just my dos centavos

Blaming Kiffin is like blaming the tow truck driver that showed up up to pull you out of the ditch …..

The lawyers don't give a shite if they win or lose. They give a shite about billing the SEC by the hour and collecting on those bills. They make money whether they win or not.

In order to get a speeding ticket you have to break the law. LSU hasn't broken any rules here. I don't know why that's so hard for some of you to understand.

They don't. What do you think their leg is? The fact that neither you nor anyone else can actually answer that question has been the elephant in the room for weeks now.

The SEC is a pretty small organization; it employs less than 200 people. I don't personally think I'm smarter than their lawyers, that's why I've done a lot of research into the matter.

Incorrect.

Using your example, LSU was pulled over and threatened with life in prison because the officer thought they might speed. This is in a town where they've never had or enforced a speed limit, and LSU didn't break the new one they set.

The certainty with which you guys believe that LSU did nothing is astounding.

The certainty with which you believe they did anything is equally astounding.

I think some people predicted the drama so much, that they were forced to create some.

Call me old-fashioned, but I prefer my SEC legal squabbling confined to the off-season; you know, like when that fat, donut-eating bag of shite was dodging subpoenas at SEC Media Days.

Yes.

LINK

The NCAA/SEC ruled him ineligible, and still considers him ineligible. The whole argument is over who is in charge of college sports rules, the NCAA or state courts? The injunction by the state court prevents the NCAA from enforcing it's current eligibility decision while the lawsuit proceeds.

"The hearing for Chambliss followed his request for a sixth year of eligibility, which was denied by the NCAA on Jan. 9 and again on appeal Feb. 5. Ole Miss filed a request for reconsideration from the NCAA, claiming new evidence. That request was filed Monday and had also been denied."

"This decision in a state court illustrates the impossible situation created by differing court decisions that serve to undermine rules agreed to by the same NCAA members who later challenge them in court," the NCAA said in a statement."

PGJ,
There are a few things that people need to understand about this lawsuit. The SEC didn't file the lawsuit with intention of actually having a trial and winning.
The SEC's own filing, motions and statements all point to their purpose of filing the suit.
The immediate main goals were to obtain quick TRO to force Louisiana state officials out of the fight, and to force LSU into a quick settlement wherein LSU would admit wrong doing and punish Kiffin.

The SEC failed on their two main goals.
They have completely failed to accomplish what they wanted, and this dumbass article claims LSU is in a corner with only two bad options. That is ridiculous and stupid.

Consider a couple things that the SEC actually included in their motions: The SEC literally included part of a locker room speech. That in of itself shows desperation to articulate an argument.
The other stupid point the SEC made in a motion was the argument that the Louisiana AG filing for dismissal was to be considered as evidence of further noncompliant behavior.
This last point is the most telling and desperate part of the SEC case.
Imagine your 'gazillion dollar ' lawyer actually compiling a motion that argued that filing a motion is noncompliant behavior.

The SEC is asking the judge to consider LSU's defense against the lawsuit to be evidence in the lawsuit.
Ask any lawyer you want about that legal strategy.

I think the bigger issue the NCAA and the SEC is trying to settle is who is in charge of NCAA and member conference rules enforcement? Do state courts actually have the authority to over-rule NCAA decisions? that is not something that can be settled out of court. I have a feeling this is going to the SC.

It's not really about Chambliss or the LSU players at all. It's about the authority of the governing body of college sports. If the court rules that state judges can overturn NCAA or conference decisions, then we might as well just get rid of the NCAA and Conferences altogether as they will be powerless to enforce regulations and every team will be managed by state authorities.

The SEC didn't rule him ineligible, even though he's ineligible according to their bylaws. This is the entire point you're missing.

The SEC is picking and choosing which NCAA rules they want to enforce and where. Chambliss/Ole Miss are technically in violation of 14.01.01, the conference does nothing about it yet they sue LSU and threaten to expel them despite LSU not even violating a rule.

Alabama plays a pro basketball player and the SEC does nothing but submit an affidavit. LSU gets sued and threatened with expulsion despite breaking no rules.

Pavia uses the courts to get around NCAA rules, the SEC does nothing about it.

How does that make sense? How can the SEC claim it can enforce its rules when it literally isn't doing so?

Exactly.

Will eligibility going forward be a chaotic mess of which local courts side with local programs (or tend to be pro-worker vs pro-employer) OR can rhe NCAA and conferences set and enforce consistent eligibility rules.

Important distinction that often gets effaced here is whether current flashpoint cases will fall under the Five For Five rule in the future or not. All the 6th year, injury redshirt exceptions fall under that in the future but not the US pro contract exceptions which is why the SEC is currently so adamant about that specific exception being addressed.

It's irrelevant because 5 for 5 itself will eventually be tossed, there is no legal basis for it. College players will eventually be declared employees and unionize and operate under a CBA, it's the only real way to have enforceable rules.

It's been stated about a million times. LSU was about to roster players who the SEC deemed ineligible. Those guys were actually on campus practicing. Yes, LSU backed down and no rules were violated, but it took a threat of expulsion to get LSU's attention. Haven't you ever had to manage unruly employees before? Sometimes the best thing to do is let them go if they are consistently pushing the regs and being a general nuisance

The SEC and the NCAA are going to be sued for damages they can’t afford.
Neither of them can legally deem anyone enrolled in school ineligible. The antitrust hammer is going to come down on both governing bodies before the ball gets kicked off in the fall.

Probably.

But that doesn't mean you can just pretend that the NCAA and SEC isn't obviously trying to find a way right now to enforce 5 For 5 and also the boundaries on NBA/NFL contracts.
