Another angle is the player knew the rules and knew he was suposed to sit out. Did he remind the coaches? Did they ignore him?

The only way to fix is to forfeit game and suspend him for 2 games. And suspend HC a game.

If they do nothing then imagine another bigger game where a team plays the player knowing no penalties will happen or can pick another game vs less good team.

If there is no forfeit, then LSU should suit up Maason Smith this week, and let him serve the suspension against a shitty opponent.

Shouldn’t this game be an automatic forfeiture now? I know that seems unlikely, but if you play an ineligible player that is supposed to be the end result.

UPDATE: The Pac-12 released a statement confirming that all the players ejected in the Territorial Cup will serve their suspensions in Week 1. Roland-Wallace is included in that declaration.

Teams should just start doing whatever the frick they want regardless of what the NCAA says. MSU should play Spivey--the TE deemed ineligible 2 days before the first game. frick the NCAA.

Lincoln Riley Cheating at USC

He's cheating USC by keeping Alex Grinch hanging around on the staff.

Lincoln Riley, USC may already be in trouble for playing ineligible player in Week 0.

Here's the loophole they're going to use: the NCAA rulebook states that the suspension will carryover to Week 1 the following season. This game was technically in Week 0.

How in the hell were the refs not aware? Shouldn't that also be their responsibility

College refs have a lot of pregame responsibilities and checking for players eligibility is not one of them. Crew’s start meetings usually a day or two before the game. Just like teams and players refs watch film on both teams. The day of or night before they usually will have meetings with someone from the coaching staff to tell them things they have noticed and what they need to cleanup.

Refs and crews get a grade from the NCAA and they also watch film on things the crew have missed and things that they can do better.

The NCAA will just let them sit him first half next week, I'm sure.

But the refs should ABSOLUTELY be aware of any ineligible players and there should be a 15 yard penalty after the play.
It's not the the ref's job to do eligibility checks. Basically, that's up to the opponents. I've actually seen this happen once, but in baseball. A&M was playing at Oklahoma State and OSU had a kid in the lineup who was not on the 27 man roster for that series. A&M coaches pointed it out after his first at bat (took them a little time to confirm what they suspected). Just a paper screw up, but a 100% ineligible player.

Or, and hear me out, we rest his knee/ankle an extra week

Week 0 has no bearing:

He should have been suspended for the 1st half of the 1st game

Everyone including the NCAA likely didn’t even remember he was supposed to be suspended

Kid probably figured it didn’t matter if he transferred to a new school as well

No, it's a valid point.

Who should care- every team playing NCAA football.

I don't accept the "USC will sit him next week" ruling, if I am the AD at any school, or any conference administrator. There have been lots of teams, marquee teams included, that have been forced to sit a guy after targeting etc. They've done so without exception, because that's the rules of the game.

This is exactly right. LSU should call up the NCAA and say either USC forfeits their first game of we are playing Maason Smith against FSU. Provided that Maason Smith is healthy, I have heard they might want to just go ahead and sit him for some minor health issues.

Riley is a slimy snake who slithered out in wee hours of morning but Bob Stoops found out and made him go say goodbye to his team (he wasn’t going to). Then he took top commits with him for grins. His actions were very sneaky (stinky, thus Stinkin Riley moniker) and thats why this does not surprise me.

Imagine what else he has and still does under the table. To allow him to get away with this would be harmful to the integrity of the sport. Every school has a compliance department and they all knew the rules and decided ro break them. Ignorance isn’t an excuse else every school would use it in defense.

They played an ineligible player and should be held accountable. If everyone recalls they struggled in the first half imagine if this player had sat. Who knows if opponent scores or not and it shouldn’t matter - USC broke the rules.
