Everyone including the NCAA likely didn’t even remember he was supposed to be suspended

Kid probably figured it didn’t matter if he transferred to a new school as well

You're probably right about that. But I bet somewhere in the teeny tiny print of the rules, the responsibility is on the school. Doesn't really matter. He was ineligible.

You know who should REALLY be going insane?

Oregon State and Washington State. Both of their AD's should be publicly condemning the Pac 12's decision, and demand that the NCAA declare the game forfeit and USC sanctioned.

I mean, seriously. USC (and UCLA) broke their conference and caused it to die, leaving them currently without a home as of 2024. They deserve no mercy for "a clerical error", if that's what they claim; and it's not like this suspension was really that obscure. It happened in a conference game.
If there's a brawl in the Egg Bowl, and one of those players transfers to Alabama, you can't tell me Saban would be unaware that the guy is ineligible first half of next season (the next game played). Same thing here; it happened in a Pac 12 game. Riley needs to be held accountable.

You know if Texas or Oklahoma did something this season, the Big 12 would rule them ineligible for conference championship.

I mean I guess he was. The rules state the suspension transfers with them?

If anything I’d only require a game forfeiture if it can be proven USC knew he was to be suspended and purposely disregarded it.

I think anyone pushing for this to be a vacated win is just bitter about their own previous suspension of a player, or they just want to find a way to try and get USC eliminated from post season.

I'd venture to say that's a no-doubter.

He was on a Pac 12 team, and the fight (and suspension) happened during a Pac 12 game. I would expect that every Pac 12 team, including USC, received emails and memos from the conference immediately following the incident.
So, it's not like you missed something that happened at, say, Grand Valley State.

You don't forfeit games for playing ineligible players. The worst penalty would be they vacate the win which would make them 0-0. The NCAA doesn't truly forfeit games anymore.

Sorry, but it makes no sense to play an ineligible player for a half of a game against San Jose State if you actually know the guy is ineligible.

Riley knowingly played in ineligible player. Should forfeit the game, and the kid should be suspended for a couple more now. However, this is USC we are talking about ...

Shouldn’t this game be an automatic forfeiture now? I know that seems unlikely, but if you play an ineligible player that is supposed to be the end result.

But can a player be ineligible if you pay them?

Then, like I said, that's a big red flag that USC's athletic department is incompetent, and invites the NCAA to come look things over.

I'll say it again; USC is a Pac 12 team, and this happened at a Pac 12 school. The conference itself would have notified members of disciplinary actions the next business day following the game, I'd be willing to bet money on that.
That's in addition to the NCAA's notifications.
2 separate, official notices.

I'm pretty sure people on the rant have speculated on "what happens if the player transfers" in the past, and folks confirmed at the time the suspension follows the player. If WE can figure that out, you've got to assume someone who's getting paid a good salary to do EXACTLY that, would also.

College refs have a lot of pregame responsibilities and checking for players eligibility is not one of them.

But they can rule a player ineligible when there's targeting and dismiss them from the game. So player eligibility is ABSOLUTELY part of their job. They're just half-assing the job.

quote:

Crew’s start meetings usually a day or two before the game. Just like teams and players refs watch film on both teams. The day of or night before they usually will have meetings with someone from the coaching staff to tell them things they have noticed and what they need to cleanup.

Refs and crews get a grade from the NCAA and they also watch film on things the crew have missed and things that they can do better.

Thank you for "Refereeing 101". I'm aware of how they prepare for game. Knowing who TF is eligible to play should be part of that preparation.

Next player who gets ejected for targeting should just come back out after halftime. Not the refs job to figure out if he's eligible or not, right?
