Let's talk about Michigan's "vaunted defense"

I'm a little bored so I looked at the total offense and scoring offense of Michgan's and Bama's opponents this season.
Average ranking of Michigan's opponents total offense:
95
Average ranking of Michigan's opponents scoring offense: 86
Average ranking of Alabama's opponents total offense: 48
Average ranking of Alabama's opponents scoring offense: 45
Michigan had 7 opponents that were not in the top 100 in scoring offense and 8 that were not in the top 100 in total offense
The only thing that throws a bit of a wrinkle is that Bama played an FCS opponent (Chattanooga) where Michigan did not.

Put it this way, I’d feel confident playing Michigan as an lsu fan , and y’all beat us pretty good.
I don’t believe they have enough offense to win against anyone worth a shite.
Osu wasn’t good this year and that was their big win.

My point is that they will stop y’all a handful of times but they won’t be able to score so it won’t matter

I was hoping Texas was going to get matched up with Michigan in the first round.

Bama absolutely pulled the easiest opponent for the first game

I know Michigan has no shot, so I am hoping he punches Saban in the face at the handshake.

If y’all can handle Blake Corum stretch left , Blake corum stretch right, Blake corum up the middle, play action occasionaly. You will be fine.

And they will let you know about it every time you speak to one of their fans

There could be a little chicken or egg scenario going on... Were the offenses statistically bad because of better defense in the B1G, or were the offense really just that bad? I lean pretty heavily more toward the latter, though there were some stout defenses in the B1G this year.

In the B1G West there's no question. The offenses were simply that bad. In the B1G East it's a little tougher to judge, but I still think the offenses probably just weren't that good.

IA was ranked 5th in total defense and had 26 points scored on them by Michigan who was ranked 68 in total offense.

Almost entirely because their offense and special teams were bad. They gave up like 200 total yards. Michigan scored all but 3 of their points on drives less than 40 yards.
Iowa just doesn't get any first downs and then gives the other team the ball inside their territory. Add in a fumble inside the 10 and a punt return and your D can be nearly perfect and still give up 20+.

Yea it seems like our defense is built to handle these type offenses. It’s the Gus’s and the Freeze’s of the world that give us fits historically….along with mobile QBs.

quote:the other thing is our experiment game against south Florida, because they were one of the worst offenses and defenses we played and the scoring wasn't there due to trying out the backups

Where did you find your stats? Just curious for my own amusement when looking at teams.

I’m utterly impressed and jealous of the improvement Bama’s Oline has made in season. I think they dominate come kickoff.

They’ve yet to play a top level offense. Ohio State was pretty dysfunctional at QB and offensive line. That bastard Milroe could give them fits
