I understand that it's a 2 part rule but for targeting to be called, both parts of the rule have to happen. The announcers mention this every time a targeting is called.

They did lead with helmet but they were not called because the players were not defenseless.

Speedy got hit in the shoulder pads first. The biggest complaint was the hit on trevor

Oh
My
God

One is a rule about using the crown- defensseless player not required

One is about hitting with the helmet in general- defenseless player is required

I've already agreed that they did lead with the helmet but to be targeting, as ya'll proclaim, the player has to be defenseless. That may have been a penalty but not an ejectable offense.

Under NCAA rules, a defenseless player is a key element in targeting. While all players are protected from forcible contact by an opponent who uses the crown of his helmet (9-1-3), it is a targeting foul only if an opponent takes aim and attacks the head and neck area with forcible contact that goes beyond making a legal tackle, a legal block or playing the ball, and involving a defenseless player (9-1-4

Targeting Explained by the NCAA - YouTube

Clearly states that the crown of the helmet portion of the foul is not dependent on whether the player is defenseless or not...

I forgot about Trevor Knight. A&M has a different QB every year.

the rule is 2 fricking parts. Jesus christ. How is this even a debate? They talk about it every single college football game and we've already seen multiple ejections when the player isn't defenseless.

That was a very informative video! Never heard it explained in detail. Thank you for posting that!

The hit on speedy though, looks like he initiates contact with the side of his helmet. The hit on trevor was targeting but I don't think the other one was.

New interpretations for targeting fouls issued

quote:

The first interpretation involves forcible contact against an opponent with the crown of the helmet, which is defined as the portion of the helmet above the facemask.

“It seems that some officials have been interpreting the crown of the helmet to mean the tip-top portion of the helmet only,” said Redding. “We want everyone to understand that the crown of the helmet starts from the area above the facemask to the dome of the helmet.”

Clearly Mack hit Speedy's face mask with the area of his helmet above his face mask... it could even be considered the dome of his helmet (and the white line on his helmet his hitting Speedy's face mask so definitely not the side of his helmet), which is defined as the crown of the helmet.
