Kyle McCord transferring from Ohio State is certainly a new 1st in the portal era

3rd year QB who started and played every snap (and wasn't great but also was not a disaster) for a team that went 11-1 and finished ranked #6 leaving.

Has there been another transfer quite like that? USC has had a long line of guys who played early transfer (Slovis, Daniels, Dart), but none of those guys were clearly the starter all year for a really good team.

Unique because it’s a QB, but we had two starting WRs, who won NCs and caught TDs in them..both on other teams in this years playoffs.

Maybe Caleb Williams is the closest analogy.

He did follow his coach, though.

Definitely curious. Guess he’s looking for more money?

I’m not familiar enough with OSU. Do they have someone behind him that was going to overtake him? Like a Hurts/Tua scenario?

Its a headscratcher for sure. Day must be going after one of these transfer portal QBs and told him so.

Not transferring

You’re going to see a lot of starting QBs jump into the portal to force their boosters to offer large NIL deals. They have no intention of leaving, but they’d be dumb to not get the money from their program, especially if they’re still wanted there

Burton did not catch a TD in the NCG. Did catch one vs. Michigan. He would have caught one vs. Bama but their DB tackled him before the ball got there. Smart play.

My guess is he kind of knows he's not gonna be the guy next year. And they probably are paying someone lower on the depth chart more than him.

I mean I guess but he started every regular season game and they were 10-2 in the regular season. I feel like it still fits the criteria for the post

Good point, but it was pretty clear Klubnik had/would take his job.

I assume this is somewhat comparable in that Day at the very least told McCord the QB job was gonna be wide open again or something to that effect.

They must think Air Noland is going to be that good, or they have a transfer lined up. Maybe Cam Ward?

Maybe the kid he beat out (Brown) has improved during the year? If not, then yea maybe they are hitting the portal hard and let him know that.

Interesting to say the least.

I would imagine so. I can’t imagine he was told he has the job locked up
