I guess the second layer to the question is, do you honestly think that South Carolina has the same type of ceiling as Clemson, Georgia, Florida, etc?

Florida? No, as a result of having the most fertile recruiting in the country.

Georgia? No, for much the same reason.

Clemson? Why the hell not? We share a state, and largely recruit the same areas. We're a bigger school with more money. They have an easier path to the playoff than UGA/UF, but part of their success is due in part to being able to beat some mediocre-to-bad Carolina teams.

Clemson is rolling right now, no doubt. The first major step in being able to become a nationally relevant program is to win the division, then being able to beat Clemson again. It's a tall task, but it has been done here recently, and can be done again.

LOL. Kirby Smart is taking advantage the SEC being down and the SEC East in particularly being a dumpster fire for the last 4 seasons. I wouldn't hold my breath on you guys winning the SEC so easily again, especially since Florida and Tennessee might have competent coaching soon. Then you'll be back to where Richt was and choking the SEC away except every 10 years or so.

It's cute UGA fans are lecturing people about managing expectations. Most delusional fanbase aside from Tennessee for sure. At least Tennessee has won a national title in the last 20 years.

Carolina can win as big as any of those 3 schools. 2012 was USC's window with Spurrier. Dawg fans know exactly how talented/capable that 2012 Gamecock team was.

matter of fact, USC was closer to winning it all in 2012 before the upstate school finally figured out their LOS play was not good enough. they kept recruiting and USC got lazy with recruiting. that's why things are where they are with USC today.

2012 SEC East finished with 4 ranked teams. the SEC overall finished 7 ranked teams. only Alabama finished with less losses (1) than Carolina (2) that year. Gamecocks have won in the SEC when the SEC is at its best.

Seems like this was one of those "Let's do him a solid, and let him find a job and say he left instead of actually firing him" type moment.

Les did this all the time at LSU.

Unfortunately for Roper, nobody actually wanted to hire him.

That was a good year. Out of 125 or so.

There comes a time when it's just time to face facts. USCe in those good years had a down-trending SEC East, a motivated Spurrier, a fired Bowden at Clemson and the resulting turmoil, and of course, The Whitney Hotel.

Don't hold your breath on Boom duplicating that.

Many of the players who helped Spurrier turn it around went there after de-committing from Clemson because of Bowden's firing. Had he been let go after the season, there's no telling how it would have worked out for either team.

You're overstating it. There were a couple players that Clemson lost when Bowden was fired that ended up at USC but most were never Clemson commits.

The only one I can think of without Googling is Devonte Hollomon.

Is this thread about expectations at Scar? Or about the OC?

I was under the impression that McClendon went to Scar because it posed the fastest way to advance his career. If it doesn't work out for him there, I don't see him staying.

I probably am. We almost assuredly would have signed Gilmore. Mackey wasn't given permission from VT to go to Clemson. Lost one or two to LSU, as well.

What is the salary hole left by Roper though - it's not fvcking chump change is it.

quote:

Roper and Gamecocks defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson were both in the top 40. Robinson’s $750,000 was tied for 36th nationally, while Roper’s $700,000 was tied for 39th (they were 18th and 19th in the SEC).

The Gamecocks total staff ranked 17th in the country and 10th in the SEC. It should be noted that includes Tennessee, Florida, Texas A&M and Ole Miss, all staffs that will be mostly different next season.
