There's a little bit of gloating going on there I think.

ETA: In all seriousness, when Kiffin got to Tennessee he was way too immature to be a head coach. What happened to him at USC humbled him and he learned even more humility, discipline, and maturity working under Saban.

Yes, he found a niche years before anybody else. He came on Birmingham Alabama radio and started running down Bama football. Ray perkins sux, Bill Curry sux, Gene Stallings sux, Bama sux. This was his theme. He dogged Bama every single day. On top of that he pounded his chest about being a UT grad. There was the brilliance in his method of madness. This lit up the phone lines and got advertising through the roof. He did the opposite in what most guys do in pandering to the local fans. He enraged the local fans. It made him millions and got him syndicated. He had never played, never coached. He was a sportswriter for the Post Herald.
He got on ESPN. He still has an "edge" but he has toned it WAY down. His job requires him to talk facts but the old Finebaum is still there at times but it is nothing compared to what it used to be. I admit, I would listen just to get pissed off. I remember hearing him call the Bama AD an ignorant fool once in an interview. He was a shock jock before there was such a thing.

eeehhhhhhh it's more nuanced than that. TT above hit on it pretty good I think. Finebaum is like a radio version of jerry springer. Sure you can say springer got rich "simply by being a couple's counselor" but I mean obviously taht's not telling the whole tale. Finebaum started to blow up by being in a hotbed football state with a ton of unintelligent people and got them all riled up by talking shite about their team and then got them calling in to talk shite about himself and the other callers. From there it exploded then a national audience came along and paid him the big bucks.

If you want actual insight on SEC sports there's likely tons of better places to go.

The remarkable thing about all of that is that Paul Finebaum knows very, very little about the game of football, as far as it relates to X’s & O’s, and he’ll tell you that.

Might not be too respectable but you don't get paid that much unless you are good at something.

As someone who listened to Finebaum somewhat religiously from 2002-2011, I can say that this is 100% horseshite. The man definitely dogged Alabama but that's because we deserved it. He recognized the hiring of Mike Shula for what it was and recognized the man for who he was (a mediocre placeholder). At the same time, he dogged Auburn pretty harshly because he likewise didn't think Tuberville the guy who could get the Tigers back to the heights they enjoyed under Dye during the 80s.

When Saban arrived in Tuscaloosa in 2007 he predicted right after his press conference that Saban would win Alabama a national championship in four years. He also pissed off Auburn fans during Chizik's tenure by telling them that 2010 was fool's gold.

That was a very Saban-esque comment from Kiffin.

I don't have anything against Kiffin and the path that he took. USC was his dream job much like Tennessee would be mine so i understand him leaving when your life's dream job opens up. Too bad he wasn't ready and in the process temporarily rekt himself and us.

I blame Hamilton more than anyone in not doing proper due diligence. There were so many red flags on Kiffin and replacing Fulmer here were pretty big shoes to follow in at that time.

With that being said, i view Kiffin as a good coach but also as a Spurrier copy cat. He took Steve's formula and ran with it so to speak and social media only helps his cause.

USC also got hammered right before he showed up. They were surprisingly impatient with Kiffin given the circumstances. His 2 deep had a lot of walk-ons, especially on the defensive side of the ball.

Kiffin will never win shite. He’s good enough to keep around. I don’t think he’s a bad coach but it pays to be in high pressure situations early in your coaching career. You know how to respond, make mistakes, learn, etc. He’s literally never faced a high pressure championship or playoff scenario in his 20+ years of coaching. His decisions to constantly be rash and aggressive on 4th down and in poor field decision has cost him numerous victories.

It’s rare you see a coach just wake up after 20+ years and figure it all out. Maybe the NIL and transfer portal does it though.

If by "shite" you mean an SEC or national title I agree, but then again how many people have done that? Or will?

At the moment kirby is literally the only SEC coach that's done either. Kiffin is going to win a good many games at OM which if you followd Mississippi football for long enough know that's a pretty damn good return for them. it wasn't really THAAT long ago that 8 or 9 wins was a special season there.

now THAT I agree with. This whole modern trend of "muh analytics" is so incredibly stupid to me.

Yes, that is what I mean. You play the game to win championships. He’s the 10th highest paid coach in the country.

Outside of Stoops and Kirby, I don’t think there’s a coach in the league currently who has been there more than 5 years. And if there is, it’s only 1 coach and it’s pretty close to 5 years so not a real great barometer for success.
