Now run those stats when Bama under Golding played offenses with a pulse. Those stats don't mean shite when good OCs regularly outclassed Golding. Denbrock, Heupel and Sark (before Ewers got hurt) schooled Golding last season.

Texas scored 34 on you this year.

Part of that can be blamed on the offense being unable to sustain drives and keep the defense off the field. Yes, we had some defensive breakdowns, but nothing like, say, Tennessee last year, where our offense played at a very high level, but the defense consistently gave up the exact same plays over and over again and we made no apparent effort to stop them.

Team Defense Stats

The ole Team Defense Stats argument. We’ve seen this argument 100s of times over the past 4-5 years. You’re obviously happy to have Pete, we can all just be happy he’s at Ole Miss and not at Alabama.

Pete is definitely an improvement for Ole Miss and I'm glad he's having some success, but we're very happy with our current defensive situation.

Bama's stats are going to always be misleading because we can beat most teams with little effort. But, the fact that Golding was at Bama for 4 full seasons and isn't a head coach speaks to his incompetence. No young coordinator for Saban who is good doesn't leave Bama for a head coaching job unless he sucks.

Kevin Steele won't be on the field in two weeks. It'll be up to the Bama defensive players to stop Daniels.

Casuals put way too much stock into the coordinator spots. It's important...but the players you put on the field are way more important.

But Steele won't make them a step slow in making decisions, either, which is a big reason for the improvement. They are going to get beat some, but it won't be because they are confused or second guessing themselves, which is what happened so often in games against very good offenses in years past.

Texas is a perfect example. They made big plays because their guys beat our guys down the field. Sark found matchups he liked (a freshman in his 2nd game and a transfer in his 2nd game at the P5 level) and their players executed the plays to perfection (OL, QB and WR). I think we're better in those spots now with experience, but LSU will hit some of those plays too. But it's very different than prior years where we gave up plays because guys were taking the wrong step, handing off WRs to the wrong guy (or no guy) or just flat out in bad positions.

No, the coordinators are very important. Look at the guys on our defense the last few years who are good NFL players now and you realize Golding schemed up those guys into looking terribly at Bama. But, those guys were good players all along.

Steele is a Solid DC. I enjoyed his defenses while at Auburn.

Of course the players have to make plays, but they also have to:

-Have an effective plan for how to defend the opposing offense
-Understand their role in the plan
-Know how to adjust the plan to respond to what the opponent is actually doing
-Execute with sound fundamentals

The coordinator is heavily responsible for making sure all of that happens. They're pretty damn important. If they weren't they wouldn't get paid in the seven figures.

The other major change is 2nd half improvement. Again, I don't think it's due to some massive change in gameplan, but the defensive staff this year has been much improved in finding 2-3 things, communicating them well to players and calling a 2nd half that lets them effectively make those adjustments.

2nd half Defense post-Texas
USF : 0 pts, 136 yds, 4.1 YPP
Ole Miss : 3 pts, 128 yds, 3.4 YPP
Miss St : 7 pts, 123 yds, 4.0 YPP
Texas A&M : 3 pts, 113 yds, 4.0 YPP
Arkansas : 15 pts, 177 yds, 5.4 YPP
Tennessee : 0 pts, 109 yds, 3.3 YPP

No, no, Golding was that bad. You must not have watched Bama last year. If Bama had less than a 14 point lead in the 4th qtr you could go ahead and chalk up an L for Bama.

Damn, Kirby was Saban's DC for 8 years. Dude will never make it as a HC.

Plus he was in the ILB coach the time he was there. Amazing the difference at LB since he left. He must know his shite, but he has no ability to teach the guys

We all hated Henry To'oTo'o and Christian Harris when they were here for constantly being out of position. Yet now they are both starters on the Texans defense right now, and its a top 15 defense in the NFL...ish.
