Louisville is a Top 25 type team, legit opponent
Indiana beat Missouri.
Most of it is logistics
8 SEC games
1 P5 rival (was Indiana, now Louisville)
1 State school (Western most likely now)
1 rent a win to avoid home and home and revenue loss
12 games
In the old days it was Indiana and bigger school like Penn State, UNC, UC type games but now with UL every year + SEC games it is harder for a non football school like UK to get to a bowl playing the extra P5 game. Even tho they pretty much just play Louisville now OOC, they still usually have a Top 10 to Top 25 SoS by the end of the season which is better than most of the non football schools even if they schedule the second P5.
It is a real reason why the SEC should not go to 9 games because most other conferences have more crap teams than good ones.

Big part of that is having a yearly rival outside of conference. I'm not doing the research but I'm guessing it's somewhat similar for Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina.
If there are teams on those teams schedules other than FSU, Miami, Georgia Tech, Clemson, UNC, or NC State it's probably a season opening marquee game and Kentucky isn't a marquee team.

Mizzou OOC Power Conference Teams since 1990
Decent mix of teams
Would like to have 1 non con where we play every year (Illinois or kU) and another power non con every year. Then 2 non power noncon.
TCU
Arizona St 3x
Indiana 5x
Illinois 10x
Baylor
TA&M 2x
WVU 3x
Texas Tech
Clemson 2x
Ohio St 2x
Michigan St 2x
Ole Miss 2x
Syracuse
BYU
Purdue

Kentucky and Virginia Tech should play each other regularly in a home/home. Cats would win that game more than most people would want to admit.
also think it would be interesting if UK tee'd it up with Ohio St in Cincinnati to open a season - split the tix 50/50. it would be an eye-opener to for suckeye fans to realize how much UK actually dominates that city/region. Cats would win their share of that matchup, too.

Louisville was in CUSA much of that time.

Louisville hasn't been a P5 team for very long either. They became members of the Big East in the mid 2000s.

Correct.
The game historically was Kentucky vs Indiana every year. SEC vs B1G.
In basketball Kentucky did not play the in state schools at all as Rupp wanted to play the best nationally to be the best. Much like Pat Summit at Tennessee.
Then the politicians in Frankfort took over in the 80's and 90's and forced Kentucky to schedule Louisville, Western, Eastern, and the like. It helped the other state schools but has not really helped Kentucky as they dropped a Penn State or Oklahoma (UK around Curci was playing nationally) and even Clairborne schedule teams like Virginia Tech for home and homes.
Usually when politics get involved in sports, the fans get the shaft.

I think UK has suggested this several times but Ohio State does not schedule SEC, nor has it historically. Buckeyes and Vols are close enough you would think they would play at least once a decade but I think they have only played one or two home and homes in their collective history.

I wish we were still playing Indiana and football and basketball.

Would be nice if they brought back the Big 4 tournament
With YUM in place you could rotate it between Indy and DaVille or just go back to Lucas every year. Some of the loudest college basketball games were the UK vs IU games in the old Hoosier Dome where it was all fans and no corporate folks who did not cheer.

If you've ever watched our football team, or even heard of how they perform typically, you would understand why we only schedule Louisville as our OOC P5 opponent

I do too. Its a fun rivalry

Don't see a play date with Ohio State working out in our favor very often.

Their future schedules are set through 2022 and have none. That will be 32 years and counting. Crazy.
Not great scheduling...but they have had 2 traditional OOC P5 Rivals (Louisville and Indiana) till 2005. So, their schedule could be scrutinized since the '06 season for not picking up a P5 opponent to take IU's place...but how many SEC teams have 2 P5 OOC opponents this season?
SEC OOC P5 Opponents:
Bama - Louisville
Arkansas - None
Auburn - Washington
Florida - Florida State
Georgia - Georgia Tech
Kentucky - Louisville
LSU - Miami
MSU - Kansas St.
MIZZOU - Purdue
Ole Miss - Texas Tech
USCe - Clemson
UT - WVU
aTm - Clemson
Vandy - Notre Dame
Right now, it is rare for any SEC team to play more than one P5 OOC game per year (it isn't unheard of...but most teams shy away from it). Since UK, UGA, USCe and UF each have a traditional rival that is in another P5 conference, that is pretty much going to be their one per season along with 3 non-p5 opponents.

We had one scheduled for 2018-2019 with OSU but they backed out
