The Athletic

Basically the Kentucky, MSU, and Vandys of the SEC want to keep their extra rent a win so they can keep fans happy with a 7-5 or 8-4 record without needing to win a majority of their SEC games.

ESPN is playing hardball to preserve the original deal they signed with the SEC on very favorable terms to them by refusing to budge on the pro rata addition clause even though the SEC added huge names in Texas and OU. They are paying us the same for UT and OU that we would have gotten for adding North Texas and Tulsa. They would love the SEC to go to 9 games but aren’t willing to pay much more for us to because they don’t have to. They already have plenty of great content on a cheap deal and own the entire SEC rights with the SEC having zero leverage. Not to mention they are broke with no money left to spend on big tv deals.

Ive said this many times but this was such a horrible deal by Sankey. You add Texas and OU, switch to 9 games, then put your rights on the market. Sankey did the reverse and sold our entire package to a dying cable network that will be charging us PPV prices to stream our favorite games in the near future.

And as I've said from Day One ... it's a bullshite move. Kentucky basically plays eight SEC games, Louisville, and three games against the Little Sisters of the Poor. Including the DII game every year.

Play nine conference games, Louisville, and two teams from the MAC. Or Indiana and Cincy, like back in the day.

The SEC got worked on their deal. The SEC has more premier level teams than the B1G but the B1G has a much better deal.

Excuse us for not wanting to give the SEC an excuse to make us play Bama every year instead of every 2 or 3 years since "somehow" We draw you all more than anyone else just about

Bama is gay and I, like UK, don't care if you want 9 games. There is no incentive for us so why bother

Maybe Sankey should threaten to add Washington State and Oregon State through 2034 then. Two can play at that game.

If ESPN isn’t going to pay for a 9th game, then I say we keep the leverage we do have and keep it at 8 games until they budge.

For those worried about Georgia not playing Auburn.. easy solution.

Ws could just start out in a 3/5

12 teams to rotate through 5 games a year.

So instead of home & away every 4 years,
it’s home and away every 5 years. Not that big of a deal to buy us some time.

During that 5 year window, all games that need to get played.. get played in only 8 games a year. This gives us time to evaluate the new 12 team playoff and decide if 8 or 9 is better. It also gives us time to negotiate with ESPN for the 9th game.

We can add a 9th game whenever we want.

Let’s hold our chips and get more information while we keep playing all the games that need to be played.
.
What’s the downside?

Pretty much this.

We've played A&M once since they joined the conference (and took them to OT in the game we did play). There's absolutely no excuse for that but the conference has made sure that's happened. We're going to get fricked on permanent opponents with what has been released in multiple scenarios.

Waaaah!!!

Do you ever wonder why you start 6-0 and end up 7-5?
You’ve already got a shite schedule. Step up or step out to a basketball conference.
Your football program is just sucking the SEC tit and you should be glad for what crumbs you can get. And be glad you aren’t Vandy.

You’ve benefitted from us not missing a bowl game since 2015, bud. That money goes into the pot too. And you’ve gotten plenty of money when that TV contract comes around from basketball, which we’ve run the roost for decades.

So frick off.

But ESPN wont budge. They dont need 9 games to make a ton of money off the cheap deal they signed with us compared to what the B10 got. It’s similar to the scenario the SEC was stuck in with CBS. We tried everything to get them to renegotiate that contract and they didn’t wink because the money was so good no matter what else we could offer them.

I wonder how our AD feels since Stricklin has been adamant that we play at least 2 P5 OOC annually now.

The “We” that I speak of directly relates to the OP and scheduling when “We” will be in the conference.

It’s funny, you know.. all you knuckleheads complain that Texas is all about Texas.. and then you make this comment.

As for the chicken littles in this thread..
grow a set of balls. Seriously.

Yes, I’m talking to you Kentucky and any other team that wants an extra easy game on your schedule..

Maybe we should add two teams that will agree to vote for a 10 game conference schedule.

3 perm & 7 rotating

The bottom 4 or so football schools in this conference better be careful in how much they try to strong arm the big revenue generators they profit from, especially in any attempt that further weakens the revenue of the conference in the name of one more rent a win. Once the ACC gets raided, the next rounds of realignment will be contraction, not addition. Schools that take more than they add in revenue are going to either be forced to accept smaller shares or be kicked out of the 2 big super leagues entirely if the networks say they dont want to pay for a Vandy Northwestern game.

Take a look at Week 1 of this upcoming season. Its the weakest tv schedule Ive seen in years. LSU/FSU is the only game worth watching. The networks aren’t giving out billion dollar contracts for this shite anymore. The best programs need to be playing each other weekly.

UF @ Utah isn't worth watching?

Thats the 2nd best game and its on Thursday night. Not exactly must watch tv. FSU/LSU is Sunday. Saturday has practically nothing to watch for a casual fan.

Wow. So proud. Do you know how crappy you have to be to not make a bowl?

No debate there. But I don’t care about basketball so there’s that.
