DeBoer had the 36th ranked class this year.

What were Saban's classes at Michigan State ranked?

Yeah look at the class rankings from 2018, 2019, & 2020. Those players would’ve formed the core along with getting a Heisman Candidate in Penix.

Look there is plenty of reasons for Bama fans to be good with the hire. He’s won everywhere he’s been and nothing bad/embarrassing has surfaced about him….yet

But there is also plenty of evidence to show the guy doesn’t like doing the 1 thing we all know is absolutely required to be successful at CFB, recruiting.

What is the deal with Missouri fans defending DeBoer? It’s very odd and not great for my confidence if I am an Alabama fan

He has shown he is a great x's and o's in-game coach. That is a known. Everything else is unknown with him.

ETA Lanning and Norvelle were the two that scared the shite out of me. DeBoer is a "prove it" for me.

it’s extraordinarily hard for a west coast coach who has no knowledge or ties to the Southeast to come into the SEC and be successful.
True but Harsin didn't have the GOAT Recruiter doing a personal meet-n-greet, face to face “Handoff” to every major HS Coach in the area.

Thats gotta make a bit a difference, no?

Well Shaft, you were disappointed in Saban. So I doubt anyone will be up to your standards. God himself could coach Alabama with his son and Moses as the coordinators and you would still bitch about it on here.

"Courtney is an elite recruiter with a lot of strong, West Coast connections," said DeBoer. "He's been an integral part of building great recruiting classes everywhere he's been. He has built his success on his dynamic personality. He builds strong relationships, and we're very fortunate to be able to bring him to Washington."

Sounds like all his connections and experience recruiting are primarily west coast? He could indeed be a great hire and football operations manager but I don’t see where recruiting the south will be a big advantage for him.

You have talked down about this hire from the start. Who would you have hired in his place?

Interesting. Seems like he recruited at about the historical water level for the program.

You can’t really argue the PNW is the reason for poor recruiting while Oregon has pulled in top 10 classes pretty much yearly.

Recruiting success is mostly about the money you put into it. I'm not making a bag man joke but NIL opportunities are a factor now too. Oregon runs a recruiting operation more in line with the competitive Big Ten and SEC programs. Oregon is regularly reaching out into Texas and Florida. It simply takes money to run a national recruiting operation and Oregon has the financial backing to do it.

I can tell you that UDub football just is not a big deal in Seattle. They're more worried about bringing back the Supersonics as an NBA franchise.

Maybe DeBoer can achieve losing seasons in his first two seasons in the SEC like Hugh Freeze has done in his last two seasons in the SEC.

All of those three are "prove it" for me.

But by going off the resumes, I'd say Norvell, Lanning, and then DeBoer have shown the potential to prove it.

Norvell won at Memphis and turned around FSU who had been dogshit since even before Jimbo left.

Lanning's ties to Kirby (and one year as a GA under Saban) tell me he knows how to win, but it is a lot easier to win at Oregon compared to much of their competition because of the resource advantage they have.

DeBoer's resume is solid, just very thin at the major coaching level. Alabama will recruit itself for a year or two. After that, we'll see.

There is only one coach Alabama could have theoretically hired that was purely plug n' play for Nick Saban and that was Kirby Smart. We know in practice that was not a possibility in reality because Smart is established at his alma mater.

Literally anyone else Alabama hired to replace Saban is a "prove it" or "wait and see" hire.
