I guess you young whisper snappers just weren't around in the 90s to even have an adult conversation about this team.

They sure we're flashy against my Gamecocks that year because I was at Williams Bruce stadium when Tee Martin broke the NCAA record for consecutive completed passes. Felt like he completed 50 straight passes for receptions but we were dogs hit that year anyway so just that doesn't defend the Vols.

What struck fear in any team that played UT wasn't Tee Martin or Rocky Top or Phillip Fulmer. It was their defensive line. The Vols stockpiled the biggest baddest ugliest defensive linemen you've ever seen in your life. These guys were good. If you missed the 90s that was the Vols bread n butter. Huge offensive and defensive linemen that could play with NFL teams. They were good. That sums up their national title. When you could beat Florida and Florida state in those days, trust me, you had a frickin team and they were a wrecking crew

Kansas State was undone by UT transfer Branndon Stewart.

The 2007 *2 L LSU team was undefeated in regulation, undefeated in OT, undefeated in 2OT. 2Ls in 3OT. That team wasn't weak.

Other than Stoerner's fumble, Tennessee wasn't really lucky to win any of those games

Also lucky to beat Florida and Syracuse. Everyone forgets the Syracuse game. The phantom PI call on Syracuse on a 4th and 7 incomplete pass that would have ended the game, but the penalty gave Tennessee new life. They ended up kicking a game winning fg to win 34-33. That was luck.

Isn't that the same team that beat Alabama 35-18 that year?

Moron for stating UT was lucky to escape Auburn in 1998? So UT played tough games before playing a putrid Auburn team? Auburn played the toughest schedule in the country that year. Jamal Lewis tore his ACL? AU has playing a QB that had to where a punters helmet because that's how far down the depth chart he was. Also played a walk on fullback at freaking center. Fact is, UT was very very lucky, even as the vastly superior team, to win.

Dude, we beat 12-1, #1 ranked Ohio State by 2 touchdowns (we were up by 3 TDs until they scored late)!!
We destroyed top 10 Va Tech 48-7, and beat Auburn, Bama, Florida, Arky, and Tennessee. THAT's 'weak' ????????

And our 2007 SOS ran circles around the other contending teams in the top 5. Yeah we stubbed our toe on Arky, but every other team in contention ALSO stubbed their collective toes - even worse than we did.

Counting two postseason games, A&M's was among the toughest:

#2 FSU @ neutral field
#2 Nebraska @ home
#25 Tx Tech @ home
#13 Mizzou @ home
@ Longhorns, Ricky Williams record game (they beat State's arse @ Cotton Bowl and finished #15)
#2 K-State @ neutral field
#3 Ohio State @ Sugar Bowl

That choke job in Austin hurt A&M's final ranking, but beating K-State was worth it. We were easily a top 10 team.

There was plenty of flash on defense.

Yes. The weird thing about that game is that Alabama was blown out while outdoing Tennessee in every major statistical category. Weird game. The highlights of which are on my YouTube channel.

I really think Tulane should have played for the 1998 title. They were the best team that year, had the best coach and the best QB

Does Tennessee still play for the title that year if Arkansas didn't blow the game at the end?

If the refs hadn't blown the call on the "safety", Stoerner's fumble wouldn't have mattered. Tennessee was down 24-20 with just under 3 minutes left when Arkansas' snapped the ball over the punter's head. He kicked it from the 10 yard line, through the back of the endzone and UT was awarded a Safety.

UT was supposed to be offered a choice...Safety or ball 1/2 the distance to the goal. The proper call (rather than a safety) would have given UT the ball at the Arkansas 5 yard line. Instead, the refs automatically awarded the Safety.

Remember...UT ran the ball 43 yards in just over a minute to win the game anyway..so running it in from the 5 shouldn't have been a problem...and Arkansas' only score in the 2nd half was a field goal early in the 3rd quarter...so it wasn't like they were moving the ball on UT.

'98 UT - Arkansas Box Score

Why the refs dropped the ball in '98 UT - Arkansas game

As far as I'm concerned, the '84 BYU team was the worst championship team in history and it isn't close. Appalling how weak their schedule was.
