Does Tennessee still play for the title that year if Arkansas didn't blow the game at the end?

There would've been a rematch in the SECCG game, so who knows. The winner probably goes to the title game though since there were no more undefeated teams after Kansas State and UCLA choked.

Edit: I'm not counting Tulane for obvious reasons.

I disagree, 2007 LSU was the best 2 loss NC since 41 Bama.

41 Bama wasn't NC or even MNC just because some guy's bizarro world arithmetic system says so. Tide fans have a lot of legitimate titles to brag about, I don't see why they feel compelled to add that BS!

You can't complain as long as y'all claim 1967.

The U.S. Army grew 1,000% in one year from 1940 to 1941. If Bammer claims '41 as a Natty, it is because Bammerites were rejected for national service.

That is true. With the peace time draft passed in 1940 and the activation of national guard units, the Army went from 170K to 1.6 million in less than a year.

I always thought they were the fourth best team in the country that year behind Ohio State, Kansas State, and a healthy Florida State team with Chris Weinke as their QB. But it's not necessarily about being the best team but being the most deserving team so you have to give them credit. They were the only team to go undefeated. Tennessee didn't have to rely on polls to rank them over other teams with the same record to get to play in the NCG like 2003 LSU or 2006 Florida or 2007 LSU or 2008 Florida or 2011 Alabama or 2012 Alabama did. They were very deserving and worthy champions.

Georgia Tech did finish the season as the only undefeated team in 1-A in 1990 with a record of 11-0-1. That's better than co-champion Colorado's 10-1-1 finish, which included that infamous fifth-down win at Missouri.

I thought Spurrier claimed it.

It's very possible the Volunteers lose to Florida State if Weinke actually starts the game. Instead Tennessee had the good fortune of going up against the third string QB. And still they had a chance of blowing it at the end.

That's rich.

Alabama had the good fortune of playing most of the national title game against a back-up QB instead of the 3rd place Heisman finalist...and Texas still had a chance to win.

OP has too much bammer in him -- tends to forget about all those NC they claim that were mediocre teams that lost the last couple of games...
98 Vols were good enough at the right time bammer boy... go back in the trailer and poke your sister

5th down incident is the fault of the officials. Colorado at 11-1-1 had a much tougher schedule than 11-0-1 Georgia Tech.

K-State proved they weren't as good as advertised after losing to conference champs A&M and then Purdue in the bowl game afterwards. They sure looked like the best team for the much of the year, however.

UT lucked out with Saban and Sparty beating the Buckeyes late because they were better than FSU with Weinke. A&M played both schools that season including OSU in NOLA.

I don't hold the Alamo Bowl loss against them since they were #3 and got shafted (the BCS even adopted the "Kansas State Rule" soon after). Purdue also had some guy at QB named Drew Brees that you may have heard of.

Brees wanted to be A&M's QB, but he wasn't a big enough star at that point to get an offer. Ugh.

I still think OSU would have been the toughest test for UT, but the Vols were special that crazy season and probably still would have won.

Was at the 1998 UT AU game at Jordan Hare. Arguably the second worst Auburn team in history took the field that day and it took a borderline miracle for the 1998 champs to win. Stopped AU on the 1 yard line 8 times to perseve the win. AU was playing with its backup true freshman QB, 3rd string tailback, and 5th string center. It's was a joke of a team on offense. Granted UT was absolutely loaded with talent, they were lucky to win.
