I agree that it would have been difficult to stop. But they published the fact that they had already purchased new goalposts in anticipation. That was a defacto invitation, directly from the university, for the fans to partake in something very dangerous.

After the first one hits the ground, the rest will turn around. It doesn't take 100% enforcement, the knowledge that it will be enforced is all it takes.
The knowledge it will not be enforced at the same time will promote it.

You have to admit it’s surprising this stuff doesn’t happen more often with fans rushing the field/court. Maybe it did/does, but until recently doesn’t get caught on video.

Oddly enough, newpapers reported some of this back in the day. But you are right. I would imagine that many things went unreported or known.

So then you just have 19,999 angry people rushing the field instead of 20,000 celebrating people. I can't think of any conceivable way a stadium security team or the police could stop THAT MANY people rushing the field, even with the threat of "violators will be punished" hanging over their head.
When you get that many people with a single goal in mind, they'll play the numbers game and think "no way they could stop or punish us all"
It's mob mentality and I don't think there's any possible way to stop it, outside of making physical stadium modifications like netting or permanent fencing around the entire field. That's why these programs just suck it up and allow it while planning for it, should a major upset occur.
