I’ve always wondered why they chose that tune for the Texas fight song.

According the the report that the committee that reviewed their fight song for racial issues and that eventually recommended they “Keep the song despite the racial issues” it says the following:
“The report also found that the composer of “The Eyes of Texas” borrowed the melody from “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad,” which is a slave minstrel that was sung in labor camps”.
In fairness, this isn’t the intent today as it is sung. But it is proof the the real words to the song are “I’ve been working on the railroad” and UTs own report verified this.

I've never heard of this "Eyes of Texas" song, but, I sing "I've been working on the railroad" all of the time in the shower.
Are you saying that they are the same song? And, yes, I have occasionally watched TV with Texas playing football and I have heard their band play "I've been working on the railroad."

The Eyes was written by students as a joke because the President of The University was constantly reminding them "The Eyes of Texas are upon you," since they were the cream of the crop.
Aggies had no Eyes upon them nor were they the cream of any crop but were busy tending the crops.

Correction Sneezy, The Eyed of Texas is the school song.
"Texas Fight" is the fight song. BTW, Texas Fight tune is played using "Taps" played fast.
Keep them coming Sneezy, you might make a Longhorn yet.
